Puxi Campus G6-7 | English Speech Competitions

April 28, 2024

On the afternoon of April 25th, during YD class, students and teachers eagerly filed into the auditorium in anticipation of the English Speech Competitions. Here, they listened to the wonderful speeches given by the 6th and 7th graders.

The 6th graders were the first to kick off the special event. The speeches they delivered were about controversial topics that are closely related to learning and life. The students utilized the essay writing skills they learned in English class to express their opinions in a clear and organized manner by giving concise examples and making comparisons.

6-4 Serena, 6-6 Carolin and 6-11 Steve, focused on the topic of homework, emphasizing that homework plays an important role in the learning process as practice and review.

6-3 Jasmine spoke about the importance of learning a second language as children by interacting with a puppet koala in her presentation. She emphasized how being bilingual enhances their cognitive abilities, broadens career opportunities, and provides more benefits at a younger age.

6-7 Gabriel and 6-11 Tianyuan focused their presentations on the topic of bullying in schools, focusing on how harmful cyberbullying can be. They also suggested that schools should take more proactive measures to deal with the problem.

In the end, Gabriel from class 6-7 won the first prize of S/S+ group, and the first prize of H/H+ group was awarded to Jasmine from class 6-3. Congratulations to the winners and all the participators!

In the second YD lesson, the competitors from Grade 7 began their speech presentations. The theme was "The Science of Science Fiction", with S/S+ students focusing on science fiction authors and their predictions about the future, and H/H+ students presenting their own views on “Predictions in Science Fiction literature about the future”. Science fiction is a genre of literature and art with profound ideological connotations and humanistic concerns. The fictional worldviews and storylines in science fiction novels have triggered in-depth thinking among the seventh graders in the realms of science, technology, society and other issues.

A total of six seventh graders were selected as finalists for this competition, and they presented their speeches in their own unique styles, whilst covering a multitude of topics. The topics were as follows: uncovering the themes and meanings in Dune, the wonderful applications of H.G. Wells’ wireless communication in reality and science fiction, a biotechnology that alters the DNA of animals in The Hunger Games, the potential of cultivating cultured meat, the importance of Earl Bakken's invention of the pacemaker to the medical field, and the positive impact of nuclear fusion on climate change. The speeches were either humorous or sonorous, and the audience was deeply impressed by the charm of the contestants.

The finalist of winners is as follows, Kelly from class 7-10 won first prize of S/S+ group, and then the first prize of H/H+ group was awarded to Cathy from class 7-2.

The competition was not only a great opportunity for students to develop their oral English skills, but also a platform for them to showcase themselves. We would like to congratulate the contestants for their brilliant speeches and the ASB members, teachers and staff behind the scenes for making this event a success. We hope that the students will enjoy the springtime and shine on a broader stage in the future.
