Inheriting 160 Years of Proud: Messages from Alumni&Students XII

Hu Xufeng
The seven years of studying at SHSID is a precious experience I will never forget. Here, I met like-minded friends, studying alongside them and having fun together. Every corner of the campus holds brilliant memories for me: strolling through the fir tree woods observing the breeding and resting birds, browsing magazines with friends in the library in the auxiliary building of Xianmiantang, and using instruments in the lab in the Yifu Building... These small moments formed my wonderful middle school and high school life.
The careful guidance and selfless dedication of the teachers at SHSID laid a solid foundation for my learning. The school also provided me with rich resources, platforms, and opportunities, allowing me to step into the lab of a research institute for the first time to experience scientific research, start my own student club, and go to the University of Sydney for a summer exchange program, clarifying and pursuing my passions. My alma mater has given me not only knowledge but also inspiration and growth that will benefit me throughout my life.
My connection with Shanghai High School was quietly established decades ago: my grandfather was a graduate of the school in the 1950s—he also spent his middle school and high school years of youth on this campus. He often recalls his time at Shanghai High School, telling me stories and descriptions of the campus from decades ago. Time flows on, but the sentiment remains; Shanghai High School witnesses the growth experiences of generations of students.
On the occasion of the 160th anniversary of the school's founding, I sincerely wish that SHS's spirit and legacy will be passed on, and that its students will flourish! Thank you, alma mater, for nurturing and guiding me. May the school prosper and achieve greater glory; happy 160th birthday!

Time has flown by in a flash; it has already been four years since I left SHSID. Yet, the days of laughing freely under the ginkgo trees and tirelessly playing on the sports field, those mornings and evenings mixed with the fragrance of books and sweet osmanthus, feel as though they have never faded, vivid as soon as I close my eyes.
These years at SHSID are a shining memory. The school gave me more than just a diploma; it shaped my values, letting me know what kind of person I want to be, how to get along with others, and how to engage with the world. On the occasion of my alma mater's 160th anniversary, may you be deeply rooted and flourishing with students.
Happy Birthday!

Icy water, dry bread, overly sweet cake...
Sitting in my university cafeteria, I couldn’t help but fall into deep thought: I really love SHSID’s cafeteria!
That love burns brightly in my heart, holding a special place there. No matter what weather, what distance, as long as I had time, I would definitely go to the cafeteria. Every Tuesday before curling class, I would gulp down a steaming bowl of noodles in five minutes — the warmth spreading through me, giving me energy for the rest of the day. Even typhoon days couldn’t stop me. I’d battle the wind with my umbrella nearly flipped inside out, and when I caught sight of two other “loyal cafeteria fans” sitting there too, a beam would instantly spread across my face. The cafeteria wasn’t just a place to eat, but also a place where I found some of my dearest friends.
Beyond the cafeteria, we shuttled through the historic Xianmian Building, which surprisingly added more intimacy. I would often bump into teachers there, and behind their hurried steps and tired smiles lay their endless dedication to students: replying to messages late at night, patiently editing our essays repeatedly, and being our firmest advocate when we felt doubt.
For twelve years, SHSID has been my oasis. To have spent my youth here is my immense privilege!

The nearly twelve years I spent at SHSID were immensely rewarding, and I am deeply grateful for the valuable platform for growth the school provided. My early exposure to musical theater instilled a strong passion for this art form. When the school founded a musical theater club in the fourth grade, I was among the first to sign up. During my time in the club, we staged several diverse productions through platforms like the annual Drama Festival. As I gained experience, I gradually grew into a core member of the club.
Upon entering high school, I naturally joined the High School Musical Theater Club. This long-standing student group is highly valued by the school, providing us with an even more professional stage for performance. I especially remember two years ago, on the occasion of SHSID's 30th anniversary, we were invited to perform on the professional stage of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music Opera House. Performing under the spotlight before a full audience was a profoundly impactful experience and remains the most brilliant chapter of my youth. Even more exciting, the club has been selected to perform the opening act for the 2025 Teen Visionary Rising Star Awards ceremony.
It is the school's unwavering support that has continuously nurtured my artistic passion and deepened my understanding of musical theater. These stage experiences have not only honed my professional skills but also allowed me to appreciate the power of art to convey emotion.

Another morning arrived, and the bus started its journey with the rumble of the engine. I sat by the window, watching the scenery outside bleed into view like the ink on paper. I gazed at the clusters of immature tree leaves swaying on the branches, stared at the flower buds that were about to bloom, and then lowered my eyes to feel the river flowing past the land beneath me, perceiving my emotions that were drifting away with the water.
Since then, memories of the past -- every scene and every frame -- played before my eyes. The sound of the wind echoed in my ears, and memorable stories of spending time with my friends appeared before my eyes. It wasn't until I opened my eyes again that I saw I had finally reached the destination at the end of my memories: our school’s campus, which forever opens warmly to me.
I am deeply grateful for the years I spent at Shanghai High School. These years helped me shed my childish innocence, nurtured my growth, guided me forward, and gradually led me toward broader horizons.
Happy 160th Anniversary to Shanghai High School! May knowledge be as street lamps, illuminating every ignorant dawn.
Cong Fuhan
The first time I walked into Shanghai High School, the sky was a clear blue and the breeze was gentle. I still remember the sunlight streaming into the classroom, the warm smiles of the teachers and classmates, and that quiet moment of curiosity I felt toward the future.Since then, season after season, I’ve spent nine full years on this campus. Here, ideas clashed passionately. Voices from different backgrounds converged. And my once-hurried footsteps began to find their own pace. We celebrated diversity at the arts festival, learned to understand differences in the classroom, navigated teamwork through group projects, and gradually built confidence with each chance to speak up.
My journey here was never linear — hesitation walked alongside discovery, and doubt shared space with determination. That’s why this place holds so much more than memories; it holds the roots of who I’ve become. I consider myself fortunate to have entered this school during a season of endless wonder and uncertainty. Here, the world unfolded before me like a vast, ever-changing canvas, while the roots of my own identity grew deep and strong beneath my feet. This place invited me to chase distant horizons, yet also taught me to pause and listen to the whispers within my own heart. Today, as I walk these familiar corridors touched by the golden glow of afternoon sun, I realize I am no longer the same child who first crossed these doors. This journey has become a part of my soul, shaping who I have become. As our school celebrates its 160th anniversary, may it continue to blend tradition with innovation, and local roots with global vision—nurturing generations of thoughtful, courageous, and resilient young minds.
And as for me — I’ll carry the strength I’ve found here as I journey forward. Never forgetting where I started, and always striving to be worthy of what I’ve learned.
