SHSID High School 2025 Sports Week: Technology Empowers Sports, Energy Ignites the Campus

October 18, 2025

The annual High School Sports Week at Shanghai High School International Division (SHSID) received a high-tech upgrade this year, as students dodged virtual lasers and jumped through digital galaxies in an Active Arcade tournament that combined artificial intelligence with tradition.

For the first time, AI-powered full-body motion tracking was introduced into the event. Students competed in three motion-tracking games—Laser Dodge, Galaxy Jumpers, and Whack-a-Mole—using their bodies as controllers to duck, jump, and swing at on-screen targets. These arcade-style events added a modern twist to the event. Challenges, driven by AI-powered full-body motion tracking, turned exercise into play while training participants’ reaction time, speed, coordination, and jumping ability.

The competition attracted enthusiastic participation from students in grades 9-12, who represented their homerooms in the tournament. Coach Lawman of the SHSID physical education department shared his observations: "The Active Arcade games give instant feedback and a personal challenge, so even students who aren’t into traditional sports stay engaged and keep improving their fitness."

While embracing digital innovation, SHSID High School remains firmly dedicated to the core values represented by the Sports Week tradition—unity, friendship, personal growth, and the joy of sport. Even as the format of activities changes, these fundamental spirits stay the same. This year's Active Arcade initiative exemplified how the school integrates cutting-edge technology into its campus traditions. This approach aligns with global trends in physical education, where technology increasingly enhances sports—from professional teams using AI and smart wearables to optimize training and prevent injuries, to schools leveraging "exergames" to boost student engagement. Research shows that activities mixing movement and play can greatly improve student performance in PE classes. Additionally, the immersive experience helps maintain participation and motivation and enables teachers to offer personalized guidance using the collected data. The success of this year's Active Arcade illustrates how innovation can revive traditional traditions, setting a model for future Sports Weeks where high-tech solutions and classic athletic pursuits work hand in hand.
