Shanghai MCOP Youth Climate Conference Held at SHSID

October 27, 2025

On October 25, 2025, the SHSID campus remained vibrant over the weekend as students from multiple schools convened in Zhongxing Building. They engaged in dynamic discussions on global climate governance, participating in the first-ever Youth Model Conference of the Parties (MCOP) Climate Conference in Shanghai.

This one-of-a-kind student-led event is organized by Shanghai High School International Division and Tsinghua University's Institute of Climate Change and Sustainable Development. SHSID’s Cyano club assisted with planning event logistics, study materials, and ensuring that every student participated actively throughout the conference. MCOP had the honor of welcoming Shanghai Climate Week director Mr. Zou Rong and UNITAR director Mr. Rao Wei to observe and guide the event.

The Opening Ceremony was hosted by grade 12 student and Cyano club co-leader Aaron Xue. He welcomed all student delegates and encouraged them to share their voices and engage actively with environmental issues, beginning with achievable efforts. SHSID high school Assistant Principal  and Student Center Director Ms. Liu Qin referenced the Chinese saying “Do not neglect small acts of kindness” to emphasize the impact of small actions, further motivating students to “think deeply, speak openly, and grow together through the exchange of ideas.” Lastly, Leopold Lin from Tsinghua University (SHSID alumni) detailed MCOP’s history and procedures, closing off the successful commencement with a stronger call for youth dialogues on environmental issues.

Guided by principles of dialogue and teamwork, students were tasked with critically examining environmental issues and discussing them diplomatically. Topics ranged from climate finance for developing nations to the implementation of ambitious emissions reduction targets. Hundreds of speeches, amendments, and negotiations were made within the two committees: the Standing Committee on Finance and Global Goal on Adaptation, where students participated in international-level environmental negotiations.

It is remarkable that SHSID has a community of students dedicated to actively engaging in environmental and sustainability-related actions. Building upon May’s Youth Sustainability Summit at SHSID, MCOP further challenged students to understand climate issues through logic-driven and rational thinking. The conference provided them with an appreciation of the complexities of global environmental governance and valuable insights into international climate action, laying a strong foundation to inspire future cohorts of climate-conscious youth ready to protect our planet through meaningful actions.
