Nurturing Young Writers: High School Chinese Department Offers Diverse Platforms for High School Students

November 17, 2025

Beyond the traditional classroom, the High School Chinese Language Department has cultivated a rich ecosystem for students to explore and showcase their literary talents through multiple innovative platforms.

The "朝阳"magazine, the official Chinese-language publication of the high school division, serves as a cornerstone of this initiative. Entirely student-driven—from writing and editing to layout design—this print publication provides a tangible canvas for young creators. The recent 160th-anniversary special edition featured not only regular content but also a heartfelt collection of essays where students expressed their deep affection and connection to the school.

Complementing the print edition, the online platform "争鸣" WeChat public account regularly shares literary works from both esteemed authors and student writers. It has featured, for instance, a student’s insightful series of film critiques analyzing the works of director Wong Kar-wai, as well as themed articles curated by the editorial team—such as a compilation on “How to Read.” The platform also highlights original student compositions on various topics, reflecting diverse perspectives and literary styles.

In addition to these in-house platforms, teachers actively encourage students to participate in external writing competitions. A notable example is the ongoing World Chinese Students' Essay Writing Competition, which has generated great excitement. Our students have previously achieved outstanding results in such contests, including multiple awards and First Prize honors.

We look forward to seeing our young writers continue to harness the beauty of the Chinese language, crafting more captivating pieces that reflect their unique voices and growing literary skills.
