Middle School Science Department: Preserving Moments for Beetles, Eternalizing Beauty for Butterflies

November 26, 2025

On November 25th, students in the Entomology Elective Course joyfully received their finished handmade specimens, marking the successful conclusion of a two-week thematic activity on specimen preparation. By mastering two distinct techniques—creating crystal-clear beetle resin blocks and lifelike butterfly spreads—they experienced the beautiful intersection of science and art through hands-on practice.

The first week focused on modern resin embedding. Students meticulously mixed adhesives in precise ratios and patiently removed air bubbles to encase prepared beetles in transparent resin. This process not only preserved the insects' unique metallic luster but also transformed them into "amber-like" artworks of both aesthetic and practical value.

During the second week, the course shifted to traditional dry preservation. Here, students immersed themselves in creating butterfly specimens. With bated breath and focused attention, they carefully performed a series of delicate steps—softening, pinning, wing spreading, and setting—freezing the fragile yet dazzling beauty of the butterflies in their most graceful forms.

From modern resin embedding to traditional dry mounting, this activity allowed students to appreciate the diverse charm of specimen preparation. The moment they held their finished works, they gained not only a sense of accomplishment from their craftsmanship but also, through meticulous observation and creation, ignited a lasting passion for natural science and a desire for continued exploration.
