Hongkou Campus: Super Fun Spelling Bee— Event Report

December 12, 2025

This semester, Grade 1–3 students at SHSID (HK) took part in a brand-new English event—the SHSID (HK) Super Fun Spelling Bee! Designed to inspire young learners to expand their vocabulary and grow in confidence as spellers, this was the very first time our school hosted a spelling-bee-style competition, and the excitement across the primary grades was buzzing from start to finish.

Round 1: Class-Level Selection

The spelling adventure began during Thursday’s PG classes, where each class held its own mini-bee. Students listened carefully, spelled with great focus, and cheered each other on as they worked through their word lists. By the end of the lesson, each class had identified its strongest spellers—students who would proudly move on to represent their class in the next stage. For many children, this first round was also a chance to revisit vocabulary they have seen throughout the semester and recognize how much they have grown in their English abilities.

Cross-Curricular Themed Rounds

One of the most exciting elements of this year’s spelling bee was its cross-curricular design. Rather than focusing purely on general vocabulary, several rounds were themed around subjects students have been exploring in class.

In Math, students encountered words connected to shapes, measurement, and mathematical thinking.

In Science, the rounds included terminology relating to weather, life cycles, materials, and other familiar units of study.

Social Studies vocabulary brought in concepts from culture, geography, and global awareness, helping children connect their spelling practice to real-world knowledge.

These themed rounds allowed the spelling bee to become not only a language event but also a celebration of the learning happening across all subject areas.

Strengthening Community Through Names

Another round asked students to spell the names of their classmates and teachers. This thoughtful addition helped strengthen classroom rapport, encouraged students to pay attention to the special words that make up their daily community, and reminded everyone that every person’s name is meaningful and worth getting right. The sense of fun and connection in the room grew even stronger.

Grade-Level Finals: Crowning the King or Queen Bee

The following Tuesday, the top spellers from each class met for the Grade-Level Finals. The atmosphere was electric as the finalists stepped onto the stage with confidence and determination, ready to compete for the title of King or Queen Bee Speller. With each round increasing in difficulty, students demonstrated impressive concentration, poise, and a growing command of the English language.

An Interactive Experience for the Audience

To make the spelling bee even more engaging, the audience participated too! All students were given spelling-along worksheets to challenge themselves with the same words as the finalists. As they carefully wrote their answers, many students whispered excited predictions, compared ideas with friends, and imagined how they might perform on stage. It was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to practice active listening and take pride in their own spelling skills.

A Celebration of Learning and Language

The SHSID (HK) Super Fun Spelling Bee was not only an exciting competition but also a meaningful learning experience. Students strengthened their listening skills, grew their vocabulary, and enjoyed discovering how English connects to Science, Math, and Social Studies. They also learned the importance of recognizing and celebrating the people around them—one name at a time.

Children discover the world through words, build confidence through spelling, and learn to cherish one another through interaction. As the inaugural Spell-a-thon, it has ignited a warm and bright light, illuminating the path ahead for further exploration of language and growth.
