Puxi Campus G4-5: English Reading Week: Step Right Up to Reading!
The fourth and fifth graders at the Puxi Campus kicked off Reading Week with the exciting theme “Step Right Up to Reading!”, turning the entire week into a joyful, carnival-themed celebration of literacy. Each day featured engaging activities designed to help students explore English Language Arts in creative, hands-on ways.

On Monday, students enjoyed a Book Tasting during recess, sampling a variety of genres and discovering new stories they might like to check out from the library. Families were also encouraged to begin preparing entries for the Extreme Reading Challenge, where students take a photo reading in the silliest or most unusual place they can imagine.

Tuesday was one of the most anticipated days of the week as students attended our Reading Carnival game booths. Each booth blended English Language Arts skills with carnival-style fun. At English Pong, students tossed ping-pong balls into cups and answered grammar questions such as identifying and correcting verb tense. During Vocabulary Corn Hole, students earned beanbags by identifying vocabulary meanings before aiming for the target. Fishing for Conflict invited students to use magnetic fishing rods to “catch” story scenarios and determine the type of conflict presented. The Character Dice Roll booth challenged students to infer a mystery character based on traits and then take a shot at the carnival dartboard. At Affixes Spin the Wheel, students spun for a prefix or suffix, used it correctly in a sentence, and explained its meaning. Students earned carnival tickets for visiting booths, adding to the festive atmosphere and reinforcing essential academic skills.

On Wednesday, students dressed up as their favorite book characters from various English literary works: here stood "Harry Potter" waving his wand and murmuring incantations, while there, little fairies with glittering wings on their backs fluttered down the corridor...During recess time, students created sideshow-style character posters that highlighted memorable character traits, bringing both creativity and literature to life.

Thursday featured a storytelling competition, where students showcased their imagination and narrative skills after viewing classmates’ character slide presentations. They narrated their stories fluently and expressively in English, accompanied by appropriate body language, immersing the audience in a wondrous literary world.

The week concluded on Friday with the Author’s Alley gallery walk, giving students the chance to share their original writing and view their peers’ creative work. Students also had the opportunity to display their Extreme Reading Challenge photos, celebrating the playful ways they engaged with books outside the classroom.

Reading Week was a wonderful celebration of curiosity, creativity, and the joy of reading. We enjoyed seeing how the students “stepped right up” and made this week unforgettable!
