High School Biology Department: Mitosis Modeling Competition

December 23, 2025

On December 19, 2025, the 10th grade biology classes successfully held a Mitosis Modeling Competition in the Theatre of Zhongxing Building. Students were tasked with using materials like twisty sticks to create models depicting the entire process of mitosis. This activity transformed the abstract process of mitosis into a tangible, hands-on assessment, marking a shift in evaluation methods from rote memorization of theoretical concepts to practical application.

After receiving materials such as twisty sticks and paper plates, students quickly immersed themselves in the creative process. Within a limited time, they needed to accurately represent key stages: DNA replication during interphase, nuclear envelope disappearance in prophase, chromosome alignment at the metaphase plate, separation of sister chromatids in anaphase. The model-building process also revealed a transition in students' thought processes. For instance, some students initially struggled with how to allocate different colored sticks for each stage. Through repeated hands-on attempts and continuous model adjustments, they ultimately precisely demonstrated the characteristics of chromosome morphology and number at different stages of cell division.

The event concluded successfully amidst students' creative models and joyful laughter. As sticks were bent and shaped in their hands, the mysteries of the microscopic world of life were being understood and interpreted in a tangible way. The Biology Department remains committed to exploring and implementing more innovative teaching and assessment methods, encouraging students to actively participate, dare to explore, and continuously broaden their horizons and deepen their understanding of scientific knowledge.
