Special Lectures on Students' Physical and Mental Health

December 30, 2025

In the 15th week at SHSID, homeroom teachers delivered special lectures to senior students on managing reading, sleep, and sports during this stressful time.

First, the homeroom teachers invited the seniors to re-learn the process of reading. While reading is a common practice across the coursework at SHSID, reading in one’s spare time can train us to think, focus, and expand our understanding of the world across different cultures and time periods. Some of us struggle to read due to time, distractions, or simply because many texts seem dense or dull. To address this, the teachers suggested smarter reading strategies, like finding appealing books to read, using fragmented spare time to read, and setting small reading goals to continue the habit. It was recommended to everyone to read for ten minutes a day, which can accumulate into big impacts on our lives.

Also, the homeroom teachers revealed the secrets of sleeping well with students. Sleep is a mandatory biological process for humans that sets the foundation for learning, mood, and even appearance. One can improve sleep by sleeping consistently, sleeping in an ideal environment that is dark, quiet, and cool, as well as only using the bed for sleep to avoid associating it with behavior like gaming or chatting with friends. The homeroom teachers advised students to keep a healthy sleep schedule, even in the middle of a busy application season.

Last but not least, the homeroom teachers explained the power of sports to students. Sports are not only a source of physical exercise – it also elicits the secretion of hormones like dopamine and endorphins that enhance focus and improve mood. While some students might struggle to continue sports due to a lack of consistency, injury, or difficulty to balance, the homeroom teachers advocated for scientifically managing sports like starting slow, ensuring safety, and making sports social by playing with friends.

Through these lectures, the homeroom teachers worked hard to ensure that the seniors are physically and mentally healthy.
