Primary Subjects: Pudong Campus G2: Parent Salon
On December 30, a vibrant scientific feast took place in the Grade 2 classrooms of SHSID's Zhangjiang Campus. Ms. Geng, an expert from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, led our students through a popular science lecture titled "The Magic of 'Mushrooms'," kicking off a fantastic journey to explore the mysteries of fungi.
Ms. Geng used engaging and accessible language, starting with the common mushrooms found on students' dinner tables to bridge the gap between science and daily life. When fresh mushroom specimens were presented, the young audience was thrilled. Through close-up observation, they unveiled the "mysterious veil" of these tiny life forms.
"Are fungi ultimately plants or animals?" Faced with this challenging question, our little "scientists" actively exercised their brains, sharing diverse perspectives. Ms. Geng listened patiently to every childlike response, using vivid metaphors and rigorous scientific logic to resolve their doubts. This heuristic teaching method is the perfect embodiment of fostering "independent learners" in our classrooms.
Through exquisite pictures and stunning videos, students not only learned about the unique growth patterns of fungi but also recognized their vital importance in ecological cycles, pharmaceutical research, and food production. It turns out that tiny fungi are both nature's "cleaners" and the guardians of human health and delicious flavors!
This activity not only broadened the students' scientific horizons but also planted seeds of love for science and the courage to explore the unknown in their hearts. As future "global citizens," these Grade 2 youngsters are carrying their curiosity forward, constantly exploring more unknown scientific mysteries.
