Puxi & Pudong Campus G5: Amazon Rainforest Geography Project

January 7, 2026

In December, our Grade 5 students of the SHSID brought the Amazon Rainforest to life through a rich, inquiry-based Geography project linked to Unit 2: South America.  Beginning on December 3, students explored one of the world’s most important ecosystems while developing research skills, creativity, and collaboration.

The project was designed with two interconnected components:

· Independent Research Report:
Each student became an expert on one rainforest layer - emergent, canopy, understory, or forest floor - investigating its unique characteristics, animal adaptations, and human–environment interactions.  Students supported their findings with academic sources, visual evidence, and clear explanations, demonstrating strong research and writing skills.

· Collaborative Model or Poster:
In small groups, students transformed their research into creative, detailed models or posters illustrating all four layers of the Amazon Rainforest.  These projects highlighted accurate labelling, key facts, and examples of plants and animals, showcasing teamwork, problem-solving, and design thinking.

The learning experience concluded with an immersive Amazon Rainforest Gallery Walk on 31 December.  Students proudly displayed their work and participated in a structured walkthrough, viewing classmates’ projects, reviewing research, and learning about rainforest layers beyond their own focus.  Using field-note reflections, students recorded new knowledge, interesting facts, and thoughtful questions, turning the gallery into a shared learning space rather than a simple exhibition.

Teachers also participated in the event, voting for the Most Creative Project and Most Informative Project, thereby providing students with an authentic audience and celebrating the depth and quality of their work.

This project beautifully demonstrated our Grade 5 students’ ability to think critically, collaborate effectively, and communicate their learning with confidence.  Through the Amazon Rainforest Project, students deepened their understanding of South America while developing the skills and curiosity that lie at the heart of meaningful geographic learning.
