Lin'gang Campus: STEAM Optional Class: Exploring Structural Engineering Through Hands-On Building
Colorful rods stretch across classroom desks as gears and supports are carefully connected, and three-dimensional models gradually take shape. In the STEAM optional class at SHSID Lin’gang Campus, a themed lesson on Structural Engineering and Creative Construction is in full swing.
Centered on the idea of “learning by doing,” the course challenges students to tackle engineering tasks using colorful connectors and rods. Moving from two-dimensional design plans to three-dimensional structures, students apply geometric knowledge to ensure stability while relying on spatial imagination to create unique forms. Working in groups, some students calculate balance points, others adjust connection angles, and still others add artistic details to their models. Throughout the building process, ideas from science, mathematics, and art come together naturally.
“At first, the support kept tilting - we tried three times before we found the right center of gravity,” one student shared, holding up their completed crane model. From repeated trial and error to continuous refinement, the classroom becomes a genuine space for hands-on practice. Principles of structural stability are embedded in each small adjustment, teamwork is reflected in the smooth exchange of materials, and problem-solving skills grow through discussions such as how to make a Ferris wheel rotate more smoothly.
As gears begin to turn and desks fill with models of all shapes and designs, the STEAM lesson clearly extends beyond textbooks. Through building, students develop an understanding of engineering logic; through collaboration, they learn how to communicate effectively. In an open environment that encourages experimentation and embraces mistakes, interdisciplinary knowledge is transformed into creativity that students can see and touch. Many groups eagerly shared their next ideas as well - adding decorative stickers to their models or adjusting rod lengths to create more dynamic and three-dimensional structures.
According to course instructor Ms. Jean, STEAM courses at SHSID Lin’gang Campus focus on sparking students’ interest and strengthening hands-on engagement. By learning through play and practice, she hopes students can truly experience the joy of interdisciplinary learning and real-world application.
