Puxi Campus G6: Connect-Five Chess Competition

January 13, 2026

Recently, the lunchtime Connect-Five Chess Competition— independently planned and organized by sixth-grade ASB students— concluded successfully after a month-long run. As a proactive practice in student self-governance, this activity not only enriched students' lunchtime campus life but also cultivated a sense of responsibility, awareness of rules, and spirit of cooperation through quiet, focused games. It has become a bright spot in campus cultural development.

During the preparatory phase, ASB students proactively presented their concept to teachers and participated throughout the planning and execution. From discussing competition rules and scheduling matches to managing sign-ins and maintaining game equipment, all tasks were independently handled by the student team. During the event, ASB members took turns staffing the venue during lunch breaks, maintaining order and facilitating communication. They promptly resolved any issues that arose, ensuring the tournament progressed smoothly and orderly. This fully demonstrated the sixth graders' strong organizational skills and sense of responsibility.

The sixth-grade floor grew unusually quiet each lunchtime. It was common to see two students seated across from each other— one wielding black stones, the other white. The soft, crisp sound of pieces landing on the board varied between lively rhythms and prolonged moments of deep contemplation. Spectators murmured quietly, but mostly watched silently, respecting the players' need for focus. Some cheerfully shared, "I won three games!" Yet more often than not, the conversations revolved not around wins or losses, but around the thrilling moments within the games— some recalled the tense situation where "a five-in-a-row was almost achieved," while others laughingly reminisced about the small mishaps where a momentary lapse cost them a golden opportunity.

As the matches concluded and the chess boxes closed, the interplay of black and white stones on the boards became the quietest and warmest memory of this midday hour. This event not only showcased students' self-management and self-service capabilities but also fostered a more positive, orderly, and intellectually stimulating learning environment on campus.
