Primary Subjects G1: A World in a Shoebox— I Am a Little Ecologist
At the vibrant campus of SHSID, Grade 1 students have just completed a spectacular cross-curricular inquiry project in week 19! Integrating Science, English Language Arts, and Art, our students transformed into little ecologists, transporting the vast natural world into miniature shoebox dioramas.
As Independent Learners, the students’ mission began with a choice. From the scorching Desert to the freezing Tundra, and from the lush Rainforest to the deep Ocean, each child selected a habitat that sparked their curiosity. Like true scientists, they researched the climate, flora, fauna, and non-living elements of their chosen environment. This phase was not just about gathering facts; it was about building the foundation for self-directed inquiry.
The most exciting phase was undoubtedly the hands-on creation, where ordinary shoeboxes were engineered into vivid 3D dioramas. In a brilliant fusion of science and art, students utilized clay, sand, paper, and recycled materials to meticulously craft animals and plants native to their specific habitats. Attention to detail was paramount; whether modeling a cactus in the arid desert or a flowing river in the rainforest, students strategically placed non-living elements like rocks and water to create a realistic environment. To ensure academic rigor and demonstrate their scientific understanding, each student also carefully labeled every component and climate feature within their masterpiece.
The project culminated in a lively "Show & Tell" session. Standing proudly with their creations, students practiced public speaking skills. With clear pronunciation and engaging eye contact, they introduced their peers to the wonderful ecosystems hidden inside their shoeboxes.
Through this project, SHSID Grade 1 students didn't just memorize scientific facts; they experienced the infinite joy of learning through creation and confident expression!
