Middle and Primary School English Department: PBA Showcase: Celebrating MultimodalLearning and Global Thinking

January 22, 2026

Across Weeks 19 and 20, the SHSID Middle School held its exciting PBA Showcase for grades 6-8. The showcase featured three key events: the Grade 6 Global Citizen Ambassador Campaign, the Grade 7 Page to Stage Performances, and the Grade 8 SHSID Film Festival. These activities designed to showcase students' ability to respond to literature through critical thinking, creativity, and multimodal expression.

In Week 19, Grade 6 students gathered in the Grand Auditorium to present their Global Citizen Ambassador Campaign videos. Classes 6-1 Jansen, 6-2 Melody, 6-3 Liam, 6-5 Sherrie, 6-8 Luke, and 6-11 Jingya explored global social and environmental issues, proposing thoughtful, research-informed solutions. The presentations demonstrated students' growing awareness of real-world challenges and their ability to communicate ideas persuasively and responsibly as emerging global citizens.

The Grade 7 Page to Stage Showcase brought literature vividly to life through dramatic performance. Students presented scenes from Skellig and A Christmas Carol, using expressive acting, creative props, and purposeful staging to convey character, mood, and theme. Performances from A Christmas Carol were particularly engaging, with students portraying iconic figures such as Scrooge, Bob Cratchit, and the spirits with clarity and confidence. One especially effective moment saw the third spirit represented by a simple black coat, creating a haunting presence through symbolism rather than dialogue.

Grade 8 students participated in the SHSID Film Festival, an exciting celebration of cinematic storytelling and literary adaptation. Students created and presented original film trailers based on selected texts, which were evaluated across multiple criteria including costume design, sound mixing, editing, performance, and cinematography. We Ate the Children Last received the awards for Best Costume and Best Sound Mixing. Minority Report won Best Editing and the Student Choice Award. Button earned Best Performance, while The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas received the Best Cinematography Award.

The English PBA Showcase stands as a powerful celebration of students' sustained effort and creative confidence. Through their campaigns, performances, and films, students demonstrated a sophisticated understanding of literature and non-fiction prose. They have demonstrated not only strong English comprehension, but also what it means to be reflective, independent learners and responsible global citizens.
