G1: Geo Fair: Young Explorers, Global Horizons
Winter vacation is around the corner, but some SHSID students got the chance to travel a bit earlier at the first grade Geo Fair! Students from different campuses learned about unique countries from around the world for the first time and experienced many different cultures that make the world such an interesting place. Each campus that participated had its own spin on the event, but no matter what, each child gained a bit more appreciation for the traditions and cultures of the world around us.

On Puxi campus, students walked around their own first grade hallway to visit a country theme that the other homerooms prepared. On the walls were decorations from their work during the previous weeks in class, flags from their countries, and other cultural symbols. From Europe, the countries were Ireland, Spain, Wales, Portugal and Greece. Africa’s Egypt had some big displays as it’s a popular choice each school year. North America rounded out the last two classrooms, with Canada and Mexico proudly represented.

Hongkou campus is in its third year of hosting its own Geo Fair. This year, each homeroom had not one, not two, but five countries represented! Each desk group had parents come to the campus to help prepare a country display poster and table. Students created the poster and parents filled out the rest with snacks, prizes and games. As students explored countries like Thailand and Malaysia, they tried different snacks, like shrimp cakes and coconut juice. The Greece and India tables had games and prizes to be won. France, Morocco and Sweden represented their countries with lovely displays of cultural artifacts. South Africa, Mexico and the Brazil tables were not only educational, but very colorful.

The campus in Lingang took a trip to the southern hemisphere where they explored the countries of Australia and South Africa. Students filled out passports with information about the countries they explored, just like the Puxi and Hongkou campuses. Students learned about the traditional clothing, famous landmarks, and the sports that each country is proud of. For Australia, students bravely tasted a popular food spread from Australia called Vegemite, known for its strong flavor. Students who visited South Africa tried to sing in Afrikaans, one of its official languages!

Our world is a highly diverse place, and exposure to more cultures is highly enriching to students' lives, but not everyone has the time to travel everywhere. The Geo Fair is a fantastic chance to get a brief understanding of what traditions and celebrations are important to each place the students study. We hope students take some time to learn about other countries whenever they get the chance.
