Middle School Math Department: Phi Phenomenon: Where Mathematics Meets Beauty
Have you ever observed mathematical principles in art? While it might sound strange, even famous paintings such as the Mona Lisa are actually a mathematical masterpiece concealing a hidden sequence of numbers. Look closely at the floral arrangement, architectural structures, or facial proportions and you will see Leonardo Da Vinci's perfect calculations come to life. The grade 7 mathematics department launched an interdisciplinary project focused on the Fibonacci sequence. Students stepped beyond the textbook to explore the natural world and observe how this sequence 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13... threads order and beauty in the world.
This project centers around the Fibonacci sequence, guiding students to explore its applications in daily life, discover key mathematical characteristics, and stimulate independent inquiry through AI-assisted learning.
The first part of the project involves exploring real-world examples of the Fibonacci sequence. By observing the structure of flowers, spiral arrangements in plants, and compositional techniques in artworks, students uncovered hidden patterns of the sequence to deepen their intuitive understanding. The second part focuses on the mathematical verification of the sequence's properties. Through enumeration and observation, students inferred the inherent relationships within the Fibonacci sequence to derive the golden ratio. In the third step, students then applied these principles to analyze the aesthetic composition of artworks such as Mona Lisa.
In the final segment of the project, students were guided to use AI to generate mathematical problems related to the Fibonacci sequence or the golden ratio. They first solved these problems independently and then compared their solutions with those provided by AI. This process not only assessed students' knowledge but also taught effective use of AI tools. By comparing and analyzing the results, students were able to adopt a more critical perspective toward AI tools to engage in effective dialogue with AI and enhance learning efficiency.

This project not only guided students to a profound understanding of abstract mathematical concepts but also fostered curiosity to discover the beauty of mathematics in life. In an era of rapid technological advancement, the middle school mathematics department remains committed to learning new technologies and guiding students to think independently and engage in meaningful collaboration with advanced intelligent systems.
