Middle School Math Department: Igniting the Spark of Thought with Ancient and Modern Wisdom
In order to stimulate students' interest in learning mathematics, promote the mathematical wisdom of ancient China, and foster a strong scientific atmosphere on campus, the grade 6 mathematics teachers recently organized the event 'Math Carnival'. The event focused on three core activities: the 'Fast Calculation Competition', the '24-Point Game', and a themed lesson on 'The Mathematical Wisdom of Ancient China', showcasing the beauty and fun of mathematics.

The Fast Calculation Competition tested students' rapid mental math skills and composure under pressure. Contestants tackled challenging problems, ranging from basic arithmetic to complex sequence calculations, within a limited timeframe. The students demonstrated remarkable mathematical proficiency and excellent problem-solving abilities.

The 24-Point Game also drew significant attention. Through combinations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and parentheses, infinite solutions emerged. The competition included class-level preliminary rounds and grade-level finals, culminating in the selection of first, second, and third-place winners.

The atmosphere was electric, with students fully focused and holding their breath as they pressed the buzzers. Every move was a test of wit and strategy. This classic game greatly enhanced students' reverse thinking, divergent thinking, and flexible application of arithmetic laws, allowing them to deeply appreciate the transformative beauty and creative joy of mathematics.
The themed lesson on 'The Mathematical Wisdom of Ancient China' vividly introduced mathematical problems and solutions from ancient texts such as Nine Chapters on the Art of Calculation and Sun Zi's Mathematical Manual. The ingenious algorithms and profound wisdom of ancient scholars, spanning thousands of years, still radiates with the light of rationality. As students listened to the explanations and viewed the illustrations, they were amazed by the excellence and advancement of ancient Chinese mathematics. Moreover, a sense of cultural confidence naturally arose. Many students expressed that mathematics is not merely abstract symbols but also deeply rooted in the history and culture of our nation-a precious spiritual legacy left by our ancestors.
This lively event not only fostered a rich mathematical atmosphere on campus but also kindled students' enthusiasm for learning math. Beyond competition, it aimed to develop critical thinking, enhance hands-on skills, and encourage teamwork. By engaging in fun and dynamic activities, students discovered that math is far more than abstract symbols-it's an intellectual adventure filled with joy.
The middle school math department remains committed to exploring innovative teaching activities that inspire curiosity and broaden horizons, making the learning of mathematics both meaningful and enjoyable.
