Grades 11-12 Students Attended the Annual Law Lecture

March 9, 2026

On March 4, students in Grades 11 and 12 attended a lecture delivered by Mr. Mao, the school’s legal counsel and an alumnus of Shanghai High School, focusing on key concepts of international law and ways of avoiding legal issues.  The lecture was organized to inform students of the laws and regulations they may encounter while studying, traveling, or living abroad in the future.

Mr. Mao began the lecture with a short quiz that presented several real-life legal scenarios, urging students to consider how different legal systems might address common situations. He then introduced several basic legal principles using real-world cases, such as the legal debate around the act of burning a national flag in US, to illustrate how these principles function in practice.

Secondly, Mr. Mao covered the concept of self-defense and related legal concepts across legal systems in the US, UK, and China. He explained that while most countries recognize the right to defend oneself, the legitimacy of such actions depends on factors such as whether the threat was imminent and whether the response was proportional to the threat.

Finally, Mr. Mao addressed several issues that students may encounter while studying overseas, including drug regulations, academic integrity, harassment laws, and immigration enforcement.

Mr. Mao concluded by encouraging students to prioritize personal safety, respect local laws, and maintain integrity in both academic and social settings. Through a combination of legal theory and real-world cases, the lecture provided students with valuable knowledge on how to address the various legal issues they may encounter while studying and living all around the world.
