High School Biology Department: Exploring Principles Through Books, Pursuing Knowledge by Investigating Nature

March 12, 2026

On March 10, the High School Biology Department invited renowned science writer and researcher Dr. Liu Su from Chenshan Botanical Garden to the Theatre of Zhongxing Building. He delivered an engaging lecture titled "Would You Like to Taste Super Rice?" for teachers and students.

As an experienced science writer, Dr. Liu began by sharing his original motivation for pursuing science communication—to unveil the mysteries of science through accessible language and to inspire public curiosity. Subsequently, using his book as a foundation, he focused on plant photosynthesis, drawing an analogy to an efficient factory: plants harness light energy, using water and carbon dioxide as raw materials to produce sugars and oxygen through a precise "process," while developing diverse survival strategies over the course of evolution. The lecture also delved into cutting-edge topics, introducing how scientists are working to overcome the bottlenecks of photosynthesis and equip crops with "high-yield mecha," sparking students' imaginations about the future of agricultural technology.

Throughout the lecture, students listened attentively and engaged in active thought. The interactive session was particularly lively, with questions that were both wide-ranging and profound. Some students were curious about how science writing balances storytelling with scientific accuracy, while others focused on the critical role of plants as "carbon sinks" in ecosystems. There were also questions about the social acceptance of genetically modified technology and the allocation of research resources. In response to the enthusiastic and thoughtful questions, Dr. Liu expressed great appreciation and answered each one patiently, drawing from his own experiences. The event concluded with warm applause. However, the dialogue on science did not end there. After the lecture, many students, still deeply engaged, lingered around Dr. Liu, continuing to explore topics of personal interest in deeper conversations.

As a highlight of the Biology Reading Week event, this lecture not only allowed students to step beyond their textbooks and engage in close dialogue with an original science writer but also illustrated the profound meaning of "reading" through vivid examples. Reading, as the event demonstrated, extends beyond the pages of books—it is a deep interpretation of the natural world and a practical embodiment of the scientific spirit. May everyone, during Reading Week and throughout their academic journeys, see a broader world and a broader version of themselves in the lines of books and in all things in nature.
