Reading Shapes Thinking: Keynote Lecture by Princeton Professor
During the Reading-for-All Month activities, our school welcomed Professor Shamus Khan from Princeton University on March 12. He gave the keynote lecture titled How Reading Trains Structural Thinking.

It was Professor Khan’s first visit to Shanghai. After touring the campus, he gave his lecture in the ZX theater. Starting from sociological research and real social issues, he explained the relationship between personal achievements, social environment, and ways of thinking. He said that deep reading helps students build structural thinking.

In the panel discussion, three students from Grades 10–12 asked questions about reading habits, research interests, and future majors. Professor Khan shared that he reads a lot of fiction, and that novels influenced his writing, especially his understanding of narration and structure.

Students in the audience also joined the discussion. When talking about research methods, Professor Khan said that it is not always necessary to use many methods. Students should first learn different ways of thinking and then choose the best method for their research.

After the lecture, many teachers and students stayed to talk with Professor Khan. The event created a strong academic atmosphere and encouraged students to read and think more deeply.
