High School Math: Waterloo Math Workshop Successfully Held

March 18, 2026

At noon on March 16, 2026, Professor Ryan Trelford from the Department of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo visited SHSID High School to deliver an engaging mathematics workshop for the students. Each year, the University of Waterloo sends a mathematics professor to visit, continuing the long-standing friendship between the two institutions in the field of mathematics.

Focusing on the Essence of Mathematics, Bridging University-Level Thinking

The workshop centered on discussions around topics such as calculating relative speeds, partitioning planes, counting book-exchanges, and modulo-arithmetic stick drawing games. While appearing as specific mathematical topics, these problems actually point to the core of mathematical learning: discovering patterns, constructing logic, and pursuing rigor. The thinking process Professor Trelford demonstrated while guiding students through these problems highly aligns with the consistent philosophy of our high school mathematics classrooms: mathematics is not merely formulas and calculations, but a thinking tool for observing the world and solving problems. Whether it is building a solid foundation in high school or delving into deeper exploration at the university level, the essence of mathematics education lies in cultivating innovative thinking and logical reasoning. The students actively engaged their minds, demonstrating a keen perception of the essence of mathematics.

From Classroom to Competition, Broadening Mathematical Horizons

As one of the most influential mathematical academic institutions globally, the Department of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo hosts a series of renowned competitions, including the Euclid Contest. Our students have actively participated in this contest for many years, demonstrating solid mathematical proficiency. At the conclusion of the event, the professor introduced learning resources for the Euclid Contest and encouraged students aspiring to further their studies in mathematics to actively apply to the University of Waterloo, expressing his hope to see more outstanding students from SHSID on their campus in the future.

This event highlighted our school's unwavering commitment to fostering depth of thought and creativity in mathematics education, and it also provided students with a valuable opportunity for face-to-face interaction with a university professor.
