Grade 12 Assembly: Using AI Smartly
On March 13, 12th graders held their weekly assembly in Xianmian Auditorium. This week, Samuel from class 12-5 shared a presentation on how to ask better questions when using AI. He explained that the quality of AI answers depends highly on the quality of the questions, using the phrase “garbage in, garbage out” to convey this meaning to all students in an engaging manner. By feeding two versions of a prompt that asks AI to perform logical reasoning, Samuel showed how a weak question led to a vague or incorrect answer, while a specific question with clear criteria produced a useful response.
To clarify his stance on AI, Samuel pointed to the use of AlphaGo in the game of Go: while AlphaGo is great at recommending moves to players, players must still understand the game themselves to actually enjoy it, a principle that applies to our use of AI to assist with life, too. “Think critically, provide context, and be specific,” Samuel concluded when asked what steps could be taken to increase the quality of responses from AI. Overall, the presentation provided students with a simple but valuable message again: AI is a useful assistant for speeding up learning, but only when you learn how to use it properly.
