Grade 9 Freshman Project Showcase
On the afternoon of Wednesday, March 18, Grade 9 students reached a significant milestone as they presented their Freshman Project, "Who Are We at SHSID." Designed as both an academic exercise and a journey of self-discovery, the project guided students to explore their identity as high schoolers through authentic research and collaborative problem-solving.

The project unfolded in multiple stages. Over the past semester, students worked in House groups, meeting weekly to develop their themes. They conducted surveys and interviews, analyzed data, and built models reflecting their collective insights. With mentors’ support—refining questions, seeking feedback, and managing timelines—students transformed individual efforts into meaningful collaboration. Through this process, they discovered the essence of teamwork: balancing listening and leading, embracing revision, and sharing ideas courageously. When classes resumed in March, groups submitted project videos for peer voting. Among 54 projects, 28 advanced to the final showcase based on theme significance, output effectiveness, and video quality.

Finally, the 28 selected projects made it to the B1 Atrium to present their Freshman Project. All ninth graders were invited to evaluate other groups' work and cast their final votes for the top 12 groups. The selected projects covered a diverse range of themes, including "A New SHS Lost & Found System," "Reclaiming Our Sleep, Reclaiming Ourselves," and "Why Do Students Still Buy Overpriced Food?" Other projects explored topics related to AI, sports, literature, environmental protection, student behavior, hobbies, health and so on. Students presented their surveys, data, graphs, and in some cases, original programming they had developed themselves. After an hour later, when students had finished reviewing the projects, they were asked to vote for the top five projects they found most insightful.
The awarding ceremony marked the grand finale of the Freshman Project showcase. After carefully adding up the students' votes, teachers presented award certificates and small gifts to every student whose project had been selected among the 28 finalists. Then came the moment everyone had been waiting for: the top 12 groups were announced one by one. As each project name appeared across the large screen in the B1 Atrium, the winning students made their way to the front, where they received an extra special gift the token of appreciation for their hard work and creativity. Students, as groups, gathered to pose for photos, holding up their coupons and certificates, celebrating the culmination of months of effort and collaboration.

Thus, the Freshman Project came to a meaningful close, leaving a lasting imprint on the ninth grade class. More than an academic requirement, the project served as an experience that cultivated essential skills and values among students. Through months of collaboration, research, and reflection, participants not only explored their identities within the SHSID community but also developed a deeper understanding of teamwork, responsibility, and perseverance. The Freshman Project, in its essence, had fulfilled its purpose, not by providing final answers, but by empowering students to begin their journey of self-discovery with curiosity, courage, and community.
