Puxi Campus G1-3 Parent-Teacher Conference
On March 30, March 31, and April 2, parent-teacher conferences for Grades 1, 2, and 3 were held respectively at the Puxi Campus of Shanghai High School International Division. Each grade focused on a specific theme:
Grade 1: A Pathway to Independent Learners
Grade 2: Hand in Hand: Driving Independence
Grade 3: Unlocking Growth and Success
The conferences began with parents gathering in the auditorium for presentations on various subjects, including Chinese, Mathematics, English, Social Studies, Music, Art, and PE. Teachers provided an overview of their curriculum plans and educational goals, clearly outlining how subject instruction supports students' overall development. While explaining key academic requirements, they used real classroom examples to illustrate teaching methods and learning formats tailored to students’ needs. These approaches aim to spark students' interest in learning while strengthening core subject competencies. Additionally, teachers offered practical guidance on how parents can support learning at home, emphasizing the importance of a strong school-family partnership to lay a solid foundation for student growth.
Following the subject presentations, Ms. Zhang Yi, Head of the Grade 1–3 section, addressed the audience. Centering her remarks on the developmental needs of lower elementary students, Ms. Zhang began by introducing the school’s educational philosophy, emphasizing the importance of equipping students with future-ready skills. She highlighted that nurturing students to become independent, self-directed learners and responsible global citizens is the core mission of the elementary division. The school promotes independent learning by strengthening foundational academic skills, critical thinking, and self-directed learning abilities. Cultivating responsible global citizens is achieved through character education integrated into various subjects, along with a wide range of thematic activities. The school’s comprehensive and multi-dimensional evaluation system also captures every aspect of student growth and progress.
Ms. Zhang went on to announce the upcoming open day scheduled for early to mid-May, reminding parents of key details and important considerations. She then offered grade-specific suggestions for family education. For Grade 1, she introduced the student-led three-way conferences to be held at the end of the semester, explaining the central role students play in this format and highlighting its benefits in fostering responsibility and reflective skills. For Grade 2, she encouraged parents to help their children strengthen study habits, develop self-directed learning skills, improve time management and problem-solving abilities, and support their child’s personal growth and interests while avoiding unnecessary comparisons. For Grade 3, she advised parents to focus on helping their children improve learning efficiency as they prepare for the transition to Grade 4, and to manage their own expectations and anxieties. She stressed the importance of staying aligned with the school to support each child’s growth through strong home-school collaboration.
After the general session, parents proceeded to their respective classrooms for the homeroom meetings. Homeroom teachers engaged in in-depth discussions with parents on fostering students' independent learning skills. Parent representatives shared practical experiences from their own journeys, covering topics such as building effective home-school partnerships, creating a supportive family environment, nurturing children’s motivation, guiding time management, balancing academic work with personal interests, supporting interpersonal skills development, and using physical exercise to strengthen physical health and resilience. Teachers provided concrete and actionable guidance on key areas such as habit formation, goal setting, and growth assessment.
The parent-teacher conferences provided a comprehensive view of the school’s educational philosophy and direction, showcased the distinctive features of each subject area, and further strengthened the platform for communication and collaboration between the school and families. The successful meetings clarified the path forward for collaborative education. Moving forward, the grade division will continue to refine its teaching practices, enrich school-family interaction formats, and deepen cooperation to support every student in gradually becoming a confident, self-directed, and responsible learner.
