Grade 12 Assembly: Optimizing Basketball Shooting Using Computational Physics

April 6, 2026

On April 3, seniors at SHSID gathered in XMT Auditorium for their weekly assembly. This week, Beeno Nie, a forward for the Stallions Varsity Men's Basketball team, presented his innovative research on optimizing basketball shooting using computational physics.

Beeno’s project, titled "What is the optimal launch velocity and angle for basketball shooting?" applied ordinary differential equations to model the basketball's trajectory under the influence of gravity and air drag. Using Monte Carlo simulations, he analyzed thousands of virtual shots to identify the most consistent shooting parameters. Beeno then highlighted the key insights he gained from his research journey: in research, clear communication matters more than complex results; scientific inquiry is fundamentally an iterative process; having the persistence to overcome debugging and writing challenges is an invaluable quality. He also encouraged peers interested in research to actively seek out and participate in opportunities like Pioneer Academics programs, which give high school students the chance to work with university professors on scientific projects. “Lock in, experiment, and learn more about the world in this process,” Beeno wisely advised at the end of his presentation.

The assembly concluded amidst rounds of applause for Beeno. His interdisciplinary approach, combining athletics and academics, is an inspirational example for his peers to think outside the box and see unconventional connections between different areas of their own lives.
