Social Sciences Department: Reading Month Ignites Economic Curiosity

April 1, 2026

During this year’s Reading Month, the High School Social Sciences Department launched a vibrant reading journey for students. Over the winter break, teachers encouraged everyone to dive into engaging economics and business books, create creative posters, share ideas in class, and reflect on their learning.

After a winter of thoughtful reading and deep thinking, students stepped forward in March with great enthusiasm to share their insights, discoveries, and how these books broadened their understanding of economics and the business world.

To enrich the experience further, the department organized inspiring workshops to guide students on effective reading strategies and critical thinking from different perspectives.

At noon on March 26, Ms. Gu led two outstanding students in a lively sharing session at the Zhongxing Building Reading Room. The students presented the Psychology of Money and Elon Musk, sharing how these books reshaped their views on money, mindset, and entrepreneurship. Following their inspiring talks, Mr. Gu offered thoughtful analysis and meaningful reflections, connecting literature to real-life economic wisdom.

On March 27, Ms. Rebecca Goblin delivered a fascinating session titled “Why Economic History is Fun”. She introduced three influential books O’Rourke & Williamson, Cowan, and Pomeranz, showing students how economic history makes learning dynamic and relevant. Alongside book highlights, she also shared practical quick-reading skills, empowering students to read smarter and think deeper.

Through these warm, interactive events, students not only explored the charm of economics and business reading but also gained confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong love for learning.
