SHSID High School Chess Tournament: Chess Friends, Rivals in Grace

April 14, 2026

Chess pieces fall with rhythm; hearts connect in silence. In the sixth week of the semester, lunch breaks at SHSID High School came alive with a vibrant chess tournament. Jointly organized by SHSID Chess Club, SHSID Chess Center, and Chess Tutoring Club, teachers and students stepped away from their busy academic schedules to gather around the chessboard, sharpen their skills, and bond over the game—showcasing the energy and spirit of SHSID students.

The tournament featured two sections: the Student Points Competition and the Student-Teacher Friendly Match, balancing competitiveness and interaction. The student event kicked off first, with over 20 chess enthusiasts competing in five rounds under the Swiss system. Each player was given 5 minutes of basic time plus 3 seconds increment per move. With no elimination, participants could flexibly join on two of the three days according to their schedules, with final rankings determined by total points across five rounds. This open and inclusive format allowed beginners to learn confidently and experienced players to showcase their talent, with every move filled with thought and edge.

During the event, the B1 Atrium of Zhongxing Building became the most lively spot on campus. More than a hundred students from all grades came to participate or watch—some new to the game, some seasoned players, and others cheering loudly for their friends. On Friday, the Student-Teacher Friendly Match lifted the atmosphere to new heights. Several teachers passionate about chess joined the games, playing side by side with students. The friendly competition gently bridged the distance between teachers and students, blending warmth and sportsmanship.

At the end of the tournament, an award ceremony was held. The champion, first runner-up, and second runner-up of the student competition stepped onto the stage to receive honors and prizes. Beyond improving chess skills and critical thinking, students broadened their horizons and made new friends through communication. Organized independently by students and joined by teachers, this event offered a refreshing break from heavy schoolwork and embodied SHSID’s vision of well-rounded growth and character-building through activities.

Making friends through chess, finding joy in the game; growing wisdom through competition, living up to youth. This chess feast was a clash of minds, a warm bonding experience, and a vivid example of SHSID students’ initiative, participation, and joyful growth.
