High School Physics Department: A Warm and Insightful Homecoming

April 17, 2026

On the noon of April 16, Billy Wang, an alumnus from SHSID, returned to his alma mater for a series of exchange activities. Currently pursuing his doctoral degree with the DUNE Neutrino Experiment Group at the California Institute of Technology in the United States, Billy is a recipient of the Worcester Fellowship, Distinguished Research Achievement Award and Academic Excellence Award, among other honors.

During the noon session, Billy delivered an insightful lecture on high-energy physics to younger students, vividly introducing his research work with the neutrino research team at Caltech. Starting with a daily question — "What do we have inside us?" — he guided students step by step into the fascinating microscopic world. The lecture covered cutting-edge advances in high-energy physics research, the daily life of doctoral researchers, and his academic journey of shifting his major from mathematics to physics. The DUNE (Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment) project, which he elaborated on in particular, captivated the audience. Students raised questions enthusiastically, creating a lively and engaging atmosphere.

In the evening, Billy attended and observed the defense session of the school’s CYPT Exhibition Competition, offering professional comments and feedback on the contestants’ performances. Additionally, he shared his experience serving as a judge for the USIYPT (United States Invitational Young Physicists Tournament).

Billy developed a profound passion for physics back in his senior high school years. This homecoming not only brought valuable academic insights to current students, but also allowed him to have in-depth exchanges with his former teachers. With practical actions, he has wholeheartedly given back to the teachers and students of his alma mater.
