“Reading Star” Chemistry Activity Held at SHSID

April 27, 2026

In the first half of the semester, Grade 9–10 students at SHSID carried out a “Reading Star” chemistry reading project. This activity guided students to explore science and appreciate the humanities through reading.

For Grade 9, students engaged in a reading project based on Soap Bubbles: Their Colors and the Forces Which Mold Them. Over two weeks, they explored the scientific principles behind soap bubbles, including surface tension, the principle of minimal surface area, and how light interference produces their brilliant colors. For Grade 10, students conducted in-depth reading of Chapters 17 of Color: A Natural History of the Palette. From ochre, black and brown, and white to red, orange, yellow, and green, students gradually uncovered the chemistry behind color. By examining the chemical composition of natural and synthetic pigments, the reaction mechanisms of color formation, and how material properties influence color presentation, students deepened their understanding of chemistry and appreciated the cultural significance of color in art, history, and everyday life.

During the reading sharing sessions, students presented and exchanged their insights, transforming abstract scientific concepts into vivid expressions. The atmosphere was lively and engaging. Participating students not only strengthened their understanding of knowledge but also developed their skills in communication and critical thinking.
