Grade 9 Assembly: Reading Sharing

April 30, 2026

On the morning of April 28, all the ninth grade students gathered in the Zhongxing Building B1 theater for an assembly. This session featured a special “Reading Sharing” event, in which students who had been named ‘Reading Stars’ presented the books they had recently read and the reading strategies they used.

The assembly began with Sunny, who introduced the fascinating scientific work I Contain Multitudes: The Microbes Within Us and a Grander View of Life. Sunny shared how the book views the human body as a living ecosystem where microbes outnumber human cells. She recommended the book for being educational yet philosophical, offering a new lens through which to observe the world. Next, Danny shared insights from Rockefeller’s 38 Letters to His Son. He focused on self-reliance, the setting goals, taking immediate action, and maintaining a healthy perspective of money—being its master rather than its slave. Danny emphasized that integrity and reputation are the cornerstones of long-term success. Daniel took a more technical approach, sharing the book An Introduction to Neural Networks. He explained complex concepts like Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). Daniel’s strategy is a step-by-step approach, moving from Python to external libraries before tackling CNNs. He also advised using AI tools like Claude to clarify concepts and generate practice code. Jerry then recommended The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, a story about a Malawian boy who built a windmill from scrap metal. Jerry learned the value of persistence and looking at the world through logic. His reading strategy involves distinguishing between light and difficult books, as he recommends reading summaries and using AI tools for difficult texts.

The impact of these presentations on the other students was profound. By showcasing a diverse range of topics, they showed that reading supports both personal growth and learning. This session successfully fostered a culture of intellectual curiosity and strategic inquiry.
