High School Chinese Department: Capturing "Heartbeat Moments" through the Lens

May 9, 2026

In early May, the "Shanghai·Heartbeat Moment" Youth Short Video Competition, guided by the Shanghai Cyberspace Administration and Shanghai United Media Group, hosted by Xinmin Evening News, and organized by Xinmin Weekly, Hongkou District Cyberspace Administration, and Shanghai "Xin Party" Creative Team, came to a successful conclusion. High school students from our school actively participated in the event, using their cameras to capture the inclusiveness and warmth of Shanghai as they saw it. With genuine emotional expression and a unique cross-cultural perspective, they stood out among many entries. In the end, two students won awards including "Heartbeat Ambassador" and "Most Touching Heartstrings Award", and the school also received the "Best Organization Award".

Shanghai through the Eyes of Foreign Teenagers: Inclusive, Warm, and Bittersweet

For the foreign high school students at our school who have been studying in Shanghai for many years, Shanghai is no longer a foreign land but a second hometown that carries their youthful memories. They turned their lenses to ordinary yet touching moments: the library where they studied alone before graduation, a note with a greeting handed to them by a stranger, the bicycles they rode under the plane trees, the scent of home cooking wafting from the alleyways…

They experience the pulse of Shanghai as "insiders", while capturing, with the keen eye of "outsiders", the warmth that locals might take for granted. This dual identity gives their works a sincere and compelling tension.

Chinese Classroom Immersion: Nurturing a Deep-Rooted Love

The students' love for the city of Shanghai and their identification with Chinese culture are rooted in the strong Chinese cultural atmosphere at our school. In our Chinese courses, teachers not only teach linguistic knowledge but also focus on integrating traditional Chinese culture with contemporary urban life. From reciting Tang and Song dynasty poems in class, to listening to lectures on the "Shanghai Writers' Map" at noon; from the MIX Day event,  to graduation projects retracing the route of Blossoms Shanghai (Fan Hua)… Day by day, students come to appreciate the profound charm of Chinese culture and naturally develop a sense of belonging and love for the city of Shanghai.

In the future, our school will continue to use Chinese language courses as a bridge and cultural experiences as a bond, allowing more students to feel the charm of Chinese language and culture as well as the city of Shanghai!
