Lin'gang Campus G1-3: Reading Event
Spring breezes turn pages, and young hearts meet words. This spring, the children in Grades 1 to 3 at SHSID Lin'gang Campus each found their own way to play a warm game with books.
Grade 1 | A Petal of Bookish Scent, A Blossom of Reading
The "Lending Library" activity for first graders quietly set sail with the children's eager anticipation. In April, English picture books gently circulated among the classes; in May, Chinese stories will take over the relay.
During each borrowing time, the children take off their shoes and sit on the library carpet in pairs or small groups. Some lie on their stomachs, some lean back, all flipping freely through the picture books they have chosen. Sunlight streams through the windows, falling on the pages and on the children's focused faces. There is no rushing, no comparing – only the soft rustle of turning pages and the occasional quiet laugh of a child who cannot resist sharing something.
After finishing a book, each child writes a short review in their own words – it might be "why I like this character" or a drawing of the most interesting part of the story. For every review completed, they earn a "petal." These petals are carefully collected, gradually coming together, slowly blooming.
April brings the colors of English picture books; May brings the warmth of Chinese stories. The books change, the language changes, but the eager anticipation for reading remains the same. When the activity concludes, every child will hold in their hands a unique "reading flower" of their very own.
The first graders' book crossing continues, and the stories quietly growing between the pages will accompany them to places farther than they can imagine.



Grades 1 to 3 | Old Books, New Journeys – A Reading Relay
In addition to the first graders' book crossing, Lin'gang Campus also welcomed a lively Book Swap Fair in May, open to all children in Grades 1 to 3.
Before the event, children brought from home those books they had read over and over, now quietly resting on their shelves – still in good condition, but longing to meet a new young owner. They carefully made a bookmark for each book, writing down what the story is about, what the most interesting part is, and why they would recommend it. Every stroke of the pen revealed a reluctance to part with an old friend and a sincere wish for the next reader.
On Swap Day, for every book they brought, each child received one swap ticket. Tickets in hand, they walked like real little shoppers among the "stalls" set up in different classrooms. They flipped through this one, looked at that one, carefully read the recommendations on the bookmarks, and then solemnly handed over their tickets, taking home the new books they had chosen. Parent volunteers joined in with enthusiasm, helping to tend the little book stalls so the children could browse, choose, and discover surprises with ease.
The books that were not taken home were not forgotten – they found a new home in classroom book corners or the reading room, where they continue to accompany more children.
One old book, one "new friend"; one act of sharing, two joys. In the process of choosing, children learned to judge; in making recommendations, they learned to express; and in the exchange, they came to understand that the best home for a book is not a bookshelf, but another pair of curious eyes.
Spring will eventually pass, but the fragrance of books will not. This spring, the children of Lin'gang Campus did the same wonderful thing in different ways – opening a book and meeting a larger world.
