Between Pages and Worlds: Grade 10 Reading Star Candidates Share Their Literary Journeys

May 15, 2026

From late April to mid-May 2026, the Grade 10 morning assembly at SHSID hosted three consecutive weeks of “Reading Star” candidate sharing sessions. Ten students from different homerooms took the stage, delivering short talks of insight that blended literature, science, history, and personal reflection.

On April 29, Alfie from class 10-2 opened with a lively take on global market shifts and cheese. Steven from 10-3 introduced Oliver Sacks’ The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, exploring neurological cases with empathy and wonder. After that, Irune from 10-4 moved the audience with a powerful line on the weight of inherited dreams. Eric from 10-3 then left the author’s email and shared insights on dinosaurs.

On May 6, Arianna from 10-6 shared Yang Jiang’s On Drinking Tea, comparing human affairs to readable books and watchable plays. William from 10-8 then dove into the speculative book Who Built the Moon? Amelia from 10-10 presented The Genius of Birds, revealing avian intelligence to the student body.

On the last day of May 13, Daniel from 10-10 quoted Haruki Murakami’s Norwegian Wood: “Death exists not as the opposite but as a part of life.” and shared his insights on the very matter. Dayna from class 10(11) then recited from Homer’s Odyssey on growing up and returning home. The assembly ended with a lively reminder to vote from the teachers and warm applause.
