2026 SHSID “Green Globe” & “Youth Voices for Society” Successfully Held

May 19, 2026

On May 15, the joint final defense session and academic forum for the 2026 SHSID Science & Technology Season events — the "Green Globe" Environmental Challenge and the "Youth Voices for Society" Challenge — were successfully held in the Hsi Building Auditorium. The challenges officially launched in March this year. After multiple rounds of selection, 15 teams from the primary school division advanced to the final round to present academic posters, while 10 students from the middle school division delivered individual presentations and participated in defense sessions during the academic forum.

This year's "Green Globe" Environmental Challenge adopted the overarching theme "Innovate for a Sustainable Planet," featuring five core sub-themes: "Water Resources & Smart Technology," "Carbon Neutrality & New Energy Transition," "Plastic Crisis & Circular Economy," "Urban Ecology & Biodiversity," and "Future Food & Sustainable Agriculture." The competition encouraged students to address issues such as climate change, green energy, urban solid waste management, and ecological restoration by proposing innovative solutions. Meanwhile, the "Youth Voices for Society" Challenge provided students with five research dimensions: "Education & Technology," "History & Culture," "Public Services," "Economics & Consumption," and "Health & Wellness." The program guided students to examine contemporary social issues in the digital age — ranging from AI entering learning spaces to physical and mental well-being amid the growing "outdoor lifestyle" trend. Through scientific inquiry and interdisciplinary exploration, students developed innovative ideas, demonstrated social responsibility, strengthened their social science literacy, and deepened their awareness of becoming responsible global citizens.

The final evaluation adopted the format of an academic forum. Distinguished experts were invited to serve as judges, including Professor Chen Qiqing from the State Key Laboratory of Estuarine and Coastal Research at East China Normal University; Associate Professor Yu Xiaojuan from the School of Environmental Science and Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University; Assistant Professor Wang Jing from Interactive Media and Business at New York University Shanghai; and Associate Professor Bao Xianqing from the Department of Educational Technology at Shanghai Normal University. School leaders also attended the event to observe the students' presentations.

The forum opened with a keynote speech by Ms. Wang Jing, who shared her experiences witnessing the growth of the challenges over the past six years as both a science and innovation mentor and judging expert. Notably, prior to the final round, the shortlisted students visited the College of Architecture and Urban Planning at Tongji University on May 9. During the visit, they toured the practical teaching base and the National Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Center, and received face-to-face guidance from experts in groups organized by discipline and age level, laying a solid foundation for their final presentations.

The forum atmosphere was lively and engaging. Finalists from different campuses and grade levels presented their creative projects and participated in question-and-answer sessions with the judges. During the presentation segment, students shared projects including an AI-powered intelligent waste-sorting system, efficient decomposition solutions for fallen leaves on campus, research on the impact of AI-assisted homework completion among students, and studies on balancing park development with urban growth in megacities.

The successful organization of this academic forum not only showcased the outstanding competence and creativity of SHSID students in scientific innovation and social science research, but also demonstrated the school's long-standing commitment to science education and interdisciplinary learning. Shanghai High School International Division will continue to provide students with diverse platforms for growth, encouraging them to innovate through exploration, take responsibility through practice, and build the skills and mindset needed to become responsible global citizens of the future.
