Puxi Campus G4-5: Poetry Slam
On May 21st, the fourth and fifth-grade students recently showcased their creativity and confidence during our exciting Poetry Slam event! The students not only stepped into the world of poetry and appreciated its unique rhythmic beauty, but also learned to express their emotions and showcase their personalities through poetry. With their own written words, they built a unique bridge of communication with the world.
In fourth grade, students wrote and performed their own original poems, sharing imaginative ideas, emotions, and unique voices with the audience. Representatives from each class took the stage to present their work proudly. Throughout the poetry unit, students worked especially hard to incorporate figurative language and important poetry elements into both their writing and performances. From similes and metaphors to rhythm, repetition, expression, and pacing, students carefully crafted poems that captured the audience's attention and brought their words to life.
Between performances, students participated in a variety of engaging poetry-themed activities. They practiced finding rhythm and beat in classical songs, solved riddles, and challenged themselves with fun tongue twisters. These activities kept the audience engaged while celebrating the playful, creative side of language.
The Grade 5 Poetry Slam highlighted the breadth of talent among the students. Through humor, reflection, and creativity, students explored subjects ranging from lunch ladies seeking revenge to the relentless grind of modern life, to the opportunities and challenges awaiting beyond Grade 5 graduation. Each performance showcased the students' growing confidence, individuality, and ability to use poetry as a form of self-expression.
Students were also treated to several poems performed by teachers in multiple languages. From English to Spanish to Afrikaans to multiple Chinese dialects, the Poetry Slam celebrated how poetry transcends language and culture, bringing people together through shared stories and emotions. A special thanks to Ms. Felix for organizing the event and handling all of the behind-the-scenes work that helped make the Poetry Slam such a memorable success for Grade 5.
The Poetry Slam was a wonderful opportunity for students to express themselves, strengthen their public speaking skills, and celebrate the power of words. We are incredibly proud of all of our student poets for the hard work, creativity, and enthusiasm they showed throughout the event! While all the students were incredible, three stood out and claimed the top prizes. Third place went to Andy from 5-2, Claire from 4-10; second place to Helen from 5-9, Audrey from 4-6; and first place to Onlee from 5-11, Yolanda from 4-4. Their performances demonstrated outstanding creativity, strong delivery, and a deep connection to their poems.
