High School | Alumni Talk: Focusing on the Medical Field - A Dialogue on Education and Career Development
On May 26th, SHSID High School hosted the "Alumni Talk" sharing session at the Zhongxing Building Theater. Focusing on medical studies and career planning, the event invited two alumni from the Class of 2013 currently residing in Australia to give online presentations.
The two alumni specialize in emergency medicine and veterinary medicine respectively. Shiho is a graduate of the University of New South Wales and now practices emergency medicine. Haruka holds a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Sydney and works as a professional veterinarian. Recounting their personal experiences, they elaborated on the admission criteria, curriculum and learning features of overseas medical programs, and presented a real picture of studying abroad.
The interactive session was warm and vibrant. Students actively raised questions about internship applications, professional development and future career prospects. The two alumni answered questions patiently and shared a wealth of practical experience, offering valuable inspiration for students’ further education and career planning.

On May 28th, Kevin, an alumnus from the Class of 2020, delivered a presentation detailing the pathways and planning from pre-med programs to medical school, and shared valuable advice based on his personal experience.
Kevin began by highlighting a core question worthy of profound reflection: "Why do you want to study medicine?" He emphasized that this question, often overlooked, runs through the entire pre-med phase and reflects applicants’ fundamental motivations. He encouraged students to think deeply about their genuine aspirations and draw on personal experiences to craft compelling motivation statements.
He then introduced two mainstream medical tracks after pre-med studies: MD and DO. He compared the two in terms of educational models, career paths, strengths and weaknesses, turning the abstract idea of career planning into two clear options.
Lastly, Kevin talked about preparations for the four-year pre-med period. He outlined detailed schedules for research projects, internships and the optimal timeline for MCAT preparation. He also stressed two key principles: authenticity and consistency. Using his own experience as an example, he explained how to turn every practical experience into an impressive personal highlight.
Packed with practical tips, Kevin’s speech covered both academic planning and self-reflection on personal motivations, providing students with thorough and clear guidance.

The SHSID Alumni Talk series will continue to bring more inspiring stories. We hope the valuable insights shared by our outstanding alumni will illuminate every student’s growth journey.
