Multi-culture Lit up Life: 2026 MIX Day

June 11, 2026

On June 5, under bright sunshine,SHSID high school students celebrated their annual MIX Day. In this grand event dedicated to celebrating and experiencing diverse cultures, teachers and students traveled across ancient and modern history, bridging the boundaries of humanities, sciences, arts, and sports. They danced, painted, debated, and reflected, using careful preparation and enthusiastic participation to let multiculturalism light up our lives.

Grace & Glimmer

Chinese Culture Carnival

At the Chinese Culture Carnival, students wandered between different booths. Some picked up a brush and dipped it in ink, quietly writing every stroke of Chinese characters on rice paper. Others improvised verses, trying to compose their own classical-style poem. Some carefully blended fragrances, sealing a wisp of sweetness and good wishes into a sachet. Others immersed themselves in painting lacquer fans, creating vivid designs on the plain white silk. At the paper-cutting area, nimble fingers flew; at the Chinese knot booth, red cords wove back and forth; at the dubbing corner, laughter never stopped as students voiced classic film scenes.

Longyin Club's Dance

A sensory feast celebrating traditional Chinese culture and the strength of women was staged by members of the Longyin Dance Club and other students. The performance blended dance, music, and song, bringing to life legendary figures such as Fu Hao, Xishi, Consort Yu, and Princess Jieyou. The audience was visibly moved, with sparkles in their eyes and heartfelt admiration for the young performers on stage.

The Teacher-Student Debate

The annual teacher-student debate explored the motion: "Should people pursue emotional stability?" The pro side argued from a psychological perspective, defining emotional stability as a dynamic, lifelong inner cultivation rather than emotional numbness. The con side offered real-life observations, questioning whether an overemphasis on stability might limit authentic emotional expression.

During cross-examination, logical reasoning met empathetic understanding, and thoughtful questions inspired new perspectives. In the end, the audience agreed that the process of questioning itself held lasting value.

Mind & Humanities

Archetype Odyssey Brings Literary Journeys

As part of this year's MIX Day, students embarked on an "Archetype Odyssey," a literary exploration of classic character types found across works from different eras and cultures. Held from 9:30 to 11:30 on the 1st floor of the ZX Building, the event transformed eleven classrooms into immersive spaces, each dedicated to a distinct literary archetype. Through this hands-on journey, students encountered a diverse cast of archetypal characters—fro outlaws to sages and chosen ones—deepening their understanding of the universal storytelling patterns that continue to resonate across time and cultures.

Humanities Fair

MIX Day continued the tradition of the Humanities Fair from the previous two years, and this year's event was organized and presented by The Bloomsbury Cat club. Throughout the morning, students celebrated the diversity of SHSID's arts and humanities through a variety of open activities and exhibitions, all held on the B1 floor of the ZX Building. The day kicked off with the "Greatest Works of Art" club showcase, where many outstanding humanities clubs displayed their creative works in the ZXB B1 Lobby. Following that was the "Open Band" activity, during which student music enthusiasts gathered at the music corner to play popular melodies together using various instruments. The open mic session gave students the freedom to fully showcase their talents, as music filled the ZX Building.

Rhythm & Rhyme Finale

The Fair’s true highlight was a show in the ZXB B1 Theater, the “Rhythm & Rhyme” finale. Previously, the “Rhythm & Rhyme” event had already gained traction among the student and teacher body by blending poetry reading with improvisational piano performance. Through integrating several new instruments, pure musical performances, and utilization of special theater lighting and projection, the finale took this format to the next level. The poems read at the finale were also diverse and iconic: the setlist included poems from SHSID magazines Times and Bloom, a work written in French, and also a classic Chinese poem read by High School Principal Ma Feng. This finale also concluded the Humanities Fair, with students leaving with a refreshed perception of the artistic world.

Crisis and Transformation: Historical Short Story Sharing

During lunchtime, students from history classes presented an engaging storytelling session in the lobby of Zhongxing Building. As the culmination of their semester project, the students created original stories based on their historical studies, presenting them in various formats such as novels, plays, collections of letters, and diaries. Today’s presenters’ stories truly stood out from the rest! Their themes were diverse, covering topics such as the Tang Dynasty imperial examinations, early exploration, Japanese samurai, and the Tudor dynasty. The narrators spoke eloquently, and their down-to-earth character designs, dramatic plot twists, and vivid performances all showcased the students’ remarkable creativity and expressive skills.

Psychology Theme Activities

On the afternoon of June 5, the Psychology teachers specially organized the themed event "Creativity and Connection: A Journey of Self-Exploration," integrating art, games, and mindfulness experiences to guide students on a journey of self-awareness, emotional expression, and interpersonal connection.

The biggest highlight of this year's event was the "Psychological Game Experience Exhibition" where students used the psychological knowledge they had learned throughout the semester, co-creating interactive games with AI, transforming abstract theories into tangible, playable experiences. For example, a growth‑simulation game illustrated Erikson's stages of psychosocial development, while an escape room cleverly demonstrated how "functional fixedness" constrains thinking.

Through these creative expressions and positive interactions, students were supported in learning through play and gaining insights through experience, rebuilding deep connections with themselves and others, integrating mental health into daily life, and jointly safeguarding an oasis for the mind.

Voice & Radiance

Multilanguage Showcase

The Multilanguage and Culture Show kicked off with student host Irune leading the audience on a journey across languages and cultures. The event opened with a multilingual cultural performance: the Anime Music Club energized the crowd with a lively J-Pop dance; Mr. Mathews and his ninth-grade Latin students presented a short Ancient Roman-themed skit, Fābula Mīrābilis; a French song, Le Temps des Cathédrales, transported us into the world of Notre-Dame de Paris; and the Spanish presentation, centered on the World Cup, offered predictions in Spanish for the prospects of Latin American countries winning the trophy. Following that, eleven SHSID Language Ambassadors shared their personal growth stories of learning French, Japanese, Italian, German, Korean, Arabic, and Cantonese, demonstrating how languages broaden horizons and connect cultures and friendships.

The event concluded with the "Reading Star" Award Ceremony, honoring twelve school-level Reading Stars who stood out during the reading journey from March to June. Through three perspectives—"The Lens of Reason," "The Lens of Feeling," and "The Lens of Connection"—the event illustrated the boundless worlds that reading and language together offer to students.

AP Chinese Language Show

The AP Chinese classes joined forces to present a unique language-based performances. Six wonderful shows, each with its own distinct style, bursting with wit and humour: Studying Abroad – a stand-up comedy sharing the hilarious mishaps of overseas student life; historical drama about how tea was discovered and spread across the world showed boundless creativity; other performances prompted the audience to reflect on hot-button issues through laughter. In addition, short plays that keep pace with the latest trends won rounds of applause with their continuous plot twists.

At the performance, waves of laughter rolled higher and higher. As the performers themselves said, this was their very own “Little Spring Festival Gala”. Two semesters of AP Chinese had allowed them to appreciate the charm of Chinese language and culture in the classroom. And today, this performance was their most exuberant presentation, their grandest celebration.

Ambition & Spark

Entrepreneur Challenge Finals

The finals of the Entrepreneur Challenge were filled with the collision of wisdom and creativity. The competition theme was "AI Empowers Entrepreneurship." Students' business ideas included smart probes to reduce food waste in refrigerators, food disinfection and nutritional monitoring devices for alumni resource matching platforms, and smart wardrobe apps—all focused on real-world pain points, showcasing the deep integration of AI and business innovation. At the finals, each team delivered their road shows and faced questions and comments from judges on market demand, business models, and development potential.

HKU × SHSID AI Business Innovation Final Competition

In the Xianmian Annex auditorium, seven teams participated in the finals of the HKU*SHSID AI Business Innovation Competition. The competition focused on the application of AI in supply chain management. Student "experts" skilled in mathematical modeling, economic analysis, and computer programming each showcased their talents—using AI technologies to analyze historical user data, model and forecast future demand, and iteratively calibrate and optimize their predictive models through comparisons between forecasted and actual data, thereby forming a closed logical loop. At the same time, the competition also prompted deep reflection on how to harness technology to bring convenience to daily life while safeguarding information security and breaking through information cocoons.

Stage & Illusion Diverse Dramas Shine Brightly

Eurydice A Play by Sarah Ruhl

On MIX Day, the SHSID Classical Western Theatre Troupe kicked off the first performance slot at the Black Box with their modern experimental play Eurydice. Based on a reimagining and retelling of an ancient Greek myth, the play offered a profound theatrical experience through its poetic language and contemporary exploration of memory. The troupe made bold innovations in multimedia technology, fully unlocking the stage potential: a lift platform created a fluid, dynamic space; a 360-degree surround sound field enveloped the audience in the whispers of water and echoes of memory; and the lighting design blurred the boundary between reality and metaphor. All stage sets and visual installations were independently completed by students, showcasing the keen sensitivity to classical texts and the experimental spirit of SHSID's young creators.

Youshan Drama Club: a Performance from Dream of the Red Chamber

Youshan Drama Club brought Dream of the Red Chamber to the stage. The entire performance was woven through a single thread of dream and awakening. Dream and wake, blooming flowers and fading splendor – all intertwined. Between the real and the illusory, the very soul of the original text shone through.

The members of Youshan Drama Club poured their sincere love of Chinese literature into bringing this classic back to life on stage. At the same time, they demonstrated remarkable ingenuity in adaptation: seamlessly merging the Poetry Club with the Illusory Land of Great Void, using the chanting of poems as the key to transition between reality and dream.

Mock Trial Play — "Home Alone"

In the afternoon, at the Xianmian Auditorium, a realistic "Home Alone" scenario unfolded. The tension of a burglary and the comedy of a child outwitting the thieves were vividly perfromed by students from the Mock Trial club. The second half's court trial featured sharp arguments and provoked deep thought: the necessary limits of justifiable self-defense, the age boundaries of civil liability—the plaintiff and defense attorneys, through presenting and challenging evidence, allowed the audience to appreciate the intricacies of tort law.
