Primary Subjects Department | Pudong Campus: Little Scientists Discover Big Secrets in Nature
In the second-grade science class, teachers bring the wonders of nature's mysteries into the classroom. The goal was simple yet foundational to their understanding of plant life: to explore the purposes of pinecones, fruit, and seeds.
The young learners embarked on a hands-on journey, delving into the natural protections that safeguard seeds within fruit. They grappled with the challenge of opening the fruits and seeds without any tools, discovering first-hand the ingenuity of nature's designs and why.
The lesson then took an investigative turn. The students observed pinecones and considered the differences between trees that produce fruit and those that yield pinecones. This observation laid the foundation for a deeper understanding of the diverse strategies of seed production and protection by different plant species. Finally, the class engaged in a thoughtful comparison between fruit and pinecones as seed protectors. They discussed not only the physical differences but also the shared purpose of these natural vessels: to ensure the continuation of plant life.
From the students' perspectives, they explored the similarities and differences between the roles of pinecones and fruits in seed dispersal through this class. We believe that the students not only improved their critical thinking, creativity, and scientific skills but also enhanced their teamwork skills during the event.
