Grades 11-12: Junior Project & Senior Project Exhibition

May 29, 2023

Junior Project

Shanghai High School International Division has been committed to its students’ well-rounded development, strived to create opportunities to improve their abilities of research, innovation, practice, and communication through various means, and has supplied students with interdisciplinary learning experiences.

The annual Junior Project final presentation was held on Wednesday, May 24th. The project is an activity where students from the whole grade form a 6-8 member team to explore and research ways to improve the quality of life in Shanghai.

Since the start of the school year, students have carefully planned, conducted research, and carried out meaningful actions with the ultimate goal of contributing to society. Two weeks prior to the presentation, they gathered in their groups and started organizing the results they achieved over months of hard work to prepare for the final presentation.

There were 29 groups in total, randomly allocated to four classrooms. Each team had 8 minutes to present their project and 2 minutes to answer any questions from the judges. Each classroom had five judges who graded the projects based on: creativity, academic knowledge, speech fluency, and design. The judges scored independently to ensure fairness.

Based on the grades of each group, 10 teams were selected as outstanding projects. Among these, the top 4 teams were given the opportunity to present their projects. Team Sad Potatoes set their goal as facilitating the lives of blind people. They identified multiple difficulties blind people in Shanghai often encounter—including deformed tactile pavements and the lack of elevator buttons in Braille—and tried to address them on Shangzhong Road. Team Optimistic A+’s approach was to strengthen support systems and provide better provisions for social work opportunities in Shanghai communities. Team Previous Group focused on the impacts of Covid-19 on family conflicts. Through research and surveys, they approached the issue from different disciplines and provided corresponding solutions. Team Herman and Her Men aimed at resolving the difficulty of gathering enough people for soccer matches. Integrating what they’ve learned in class, they developed a mobile application to make it more efficient for soccer enthusiasts to find appropriate teams. Overall, all teams had impressive results that answered their months of efforts in this project.

Through the Junior Project, students discover problems in urban life and propose corresponding suggestions and plans, contributing to promoting the city we are living in and improving the quality of life. In the process of the research, students apply interdisciplinary knowledge and practical skills, such as survey research, data analysis, literature retrieval, report writing, etc., to stimulate academic enthusiasm and enhance their creativity and teamwork spirit.

Senior Project

The first two weeks of May are officially the “Senior Project Weeks”. The school offers students seminars and lectures. Students may also choose to participate in an internship or community service or complete independent research or build a creative design.

By May 18th, the 12th graders had finished their senior projects presentation in front of the judges. Twelve outstanding projects were selected and were exhibited in Xianmian Annex on May 25th.

In short-term internships, one student shared the experience of learning how to edit on TV station, one student went to a company to learn asset evaluation, and some students chose to volunteer in Charity institutions. They worked hard to meet challenges and establish connections with society.

Among independent researches, one student used cognitive models to explain depression, one student studied paintings originating from rural area in Shanghai, some students use Python code to simulate ecological principles, and some studied the relationship between internet addiction and social anxiety. They apply the subject knowledge to practical research.

The Senior Project is the last big project in high school. Seniors are about to leave high school and embark on a further journey of study. Many students choose fields related to their future majors, so this final project also drives everyone to reflect on what they have learned in high school and prepare for their future study.

At the end of the exhibition, Dr. Wu Chen, the grade supervisor, presented awards to all the outstanding students. She also sent a message to all the 12th graders, hoping that they would keep making further progress in the future.
