G8: Trivia Competition

The eighth grade has had events all year that evaluate independent learning and global awareness. On April 9th, the Grade 8 Trivia Competition was held in the B1 lecture hall in Zhentao Building. This event not only tests students on a variety of topics ranging from Biology to Algorithms and much more, but also applied the critical thinking skills students have learned and developed.

Students started to anticipate the event when it was first announced — ready to participate and take on the challenge! Each homeroom determined a small group of students to enter the first round. In each round, there were multiple sets of questions. The general rules are that each question starts as a fill-in-the-blank question, and as the amount of incorrect answers reaches a certain amount, the question becomes a multiple choice question. When the contestants and backups were selected, they were eager to start preparing themselves and to take on the challenge.

A few minutes before the first round started, when the audience members started pouring into the B1 lecture hall, the contestants started cheering for the other members of their teams. After testing the buzzers and other technical equipment, the members of the teams started discussing their strategies and tactics, including who would be in charge of pushing the buzzer. This is because answering questions not only requires quick thinking, but it also needs full concentration and speedy reactions. In a matter of seconds, the room quieted down. This was a moment that many students were anticipating all week. The first round had officially started!

In the preliminary round, 7 out of 13 teams advanced — the students of those teams were happy and excited to see their homerooms enter the next round. The smiles on the students’ faces when searching for classmates from their class and saying “Our class got into the second round!” really showed their excitement and how proud they were of their homerooms’ achievements. The round afterwards was just as splendidly exciting as the first. Dealing once again with multiple sets of questions, the players worked their way through the challenging — and often quite interesting —questions.

After a few more rounds, there were only two homerooms that successfully made it through. In the final round, the teams of class 8(6) and class 8(7) challenged themselves with the multiple sets of questions. Finally, class 8(7) won with a score of 52-48 points. Congratulations to the winners!

Even if their homerooms did not make it to the final round, students were all happy that they learned many new things, ranging from which metro lines can take you to certain places in Shanghai, to the characters and plots of famous poems. These interesting facts really help when widening our knowledge of the world. In addition, students also learned some valuable teamwork and cooperation skills in the process.

In conclusion, the Grade 8 Trivia Competition really allowed us to gain some new, useful skills and knowledge, whether that’s a new interesting fact or how to better work together.
