Grade 12: Pre-Departure Education - Money Management

April 10, 2023

In the Personal Growth class on April 3, a lecture about money management was given to remind us of a few necessary key things that need to be paid attention to in both college and later in life.

As adults in life, we need to take responsibility for everything in our life, not only all the expenses of eating, drinking, and playing, but also the internships young adults will face later on. Students were advised to calculate and record their daily expenses, such as the cost of eating out, the cost of traveling, and so on. When looking for an internship later on, students may also calculate their monthly cost requirements to compare any and all profit they earn to consider saving towards other things. At the same time, students also need to pay attention to how to balance study time and work time during college. Time management is a very important consideration when working part-time jobs. Teachers recommend that students consider their current situation when looking for a part-time job, such as the schedule of classes, geographical location (the time required to travel back and forth), and whether there is enough time for homework. And also, when students are looking for either part-time jobs or internships, they have to check whether the visa and other important certificates meet the job requirements.

In students’ daily life, there is also an important aspect that cannot be ignored: house rent. It is common for overseas students to choose to board or rent a house near the university. When looking for a house, they should consider some living needs, such as room type, location, monthly water and electricity bills. But also, they need to take into account some uncontrollable factors such as faucet damage resulting in serious water leakage, costly air conditioning being used or not, etc. These are the things that need to be coordinated with the landlord. And again, the teacher reminded us to balance the necessary expenses and the remaining expenses.

Finally, we hope this lecture made students feel less stressed about their upcoming college life experience.
