G6-7: English Speech Competitions

April 7, 2023

As spring comes, everywhere is fresh and bright. On April 6th, students from G6-7 had an exciting English speech competition final respectively. In order to present the best speech to the audience, each student has been revising and perfecting their speeches over the past several weeks. The best speakers from each class were selected and after a second round of selection in their grade, a total of 12 best speakers were selected and advanced to the final.

In the afternoon, the sixth-grade speech contest came to an “epilogue”. The theme of Grade 6 presentation is controversial topics closely related to our study and life. Using the argumentative essay writing skills learned in English class, the students expressed their views in a clear and organised manner by giving examples and making comparisons. One of the presentations by 6(1) Hanrui was about the benefits of homework and how it can help improve academic performance and independent learning skills. John from 6(3) and Daniel from 6(11) talked in dialectical language about the possible negative effects of social media. Alex and Jessica from 6(4) and Leyi from 6(6) looked at real-life issues with their presentations on whether animal experimentation should be banned, whether the use of mobile phones can be dangerous, and whether companies should market to children, respectively.

The competitors expressed their views and opinions freely, and their insightful speeches made everyone feel their passion for exploring real-life issues. In the end, Leyi from class 6(6) won the first prize of S/S+ group, and the first prize of H/H+ group was awarded to Daniel from class 6(11). Congratulations to the winners and all the participators!

Next, in the second YD lesson, competitors of Grade 7 also began their speech presentations. The theme was "The Science of Science Fiction", with S/S+ students focusing on science fiction authors and their predictions about the future, while H/H+ students presenting their own views on “Predictions in Science Fiction literature about the future”. Science fiction is an art carrier that integrates science and technology, philosophy and literature, which guides and warns the future of mankind. Great science fiction works are not only prophecies, but also early warnings, which can point out the insignificance and arrogance, blindness and stubbornness of human beings. Unfortunately, many of the warnings in the past have been ignored and turned into today's reality, such as social dilemmas, game violence, live broadcasting, artificial intelligence, environmental degradation, etc.

Chloe from Class 7 (10) started from a book and talked about the impact of online networking on modern life. In the book, the author ingeniously forested how he would live more than half a century later. Chloe believed that over-reliance on online media had reduced the intake of knowledge, but fortunately, people still had a thirst for knowledge, and incidents such as "book burning and confucianism" will no longer occur.

Esther from Class 7 (2) gave a presentation on the topic "How will Self-Driving Cars Benefit Humanity and the Environment?" In her opinion, as self-driving cars continued to be reached and worked in ,it was undoubtedly a huge benefit for humanity and the environment, as they could eusure safety, save money, and reduce the emission of Green House Gases.

There were six seventh-graders who were selected for the finals, and they each used their own unique style to explain their views — the application of A.I in medical treatment, the benefits of autonomous driving, and the disadvantages of artificial intelligence replacing labor, etc. They were either humorous or sonorous, and the audience was impressed by the charm of the contestants and nodded their heads repeatedly. The final list of winners is as follows,

S/S+ Group:7(2)Elaine,7(10)Chloe,7(11)Phoebe

H/H+ Group:7(12)Kelan,7(2)Esther,7(9)Cici

The competition was not only a great opportunity for students to develop their oral English skills, but also a platform for them to showcase themselves. We would like to appreciate the contestants for their brilliant speeches and the ASB members, teachers and staff behind the scenes for making this event a success. We hope that the students will enjoy the springtime and shine on a broader stage in the future.
