U15 Girls’ Basketball Dominates Against NACIS

March 28, 2023

After an entire two years without a basketball season due to COVID-19, the U15 Girls’ Stallions’ basketball team finally got the chance to play a thrilling match against the NACIS Rams on Thursday, March 23. Even though it was their first match this year, they produced amazing results (28-9), a huge win and a great start to the season.

As the game flowed into the first quarter, the Stallions would find themselves slightly behind; 0-4 with the NACIS Rams getting in lay-ups due to some gaps in the Stallions’ defense, and also with some failed attempts to cash in on some close-range shots. Nevertheless, after a change of strategy during a time-out, the Stallions began to regain their strength and confidence, and were able to put up points on the board, whether it was with Ella Lu’s accurate close-range shots, or with Ella Wang, Irune Shen, and Sabrina Wang’s fast-break lay-ups. As the second quarter closed off by Sabrina Wang’s huge "and-1", eventually, by the end of the first half, the Stallions overtook the lead with a score of 11-6.

The third quarter was marked by the most astonishing shot of the whole game: a three-pointer from Xinwei Wong that made the crowd roar with applause. And as the NACIS Rams put an end to their scoring, successive lay-ups from both Xinwei Wong and Fay Bair pulled the score gap to 24-9.

The MVP of the fourth quarter was Ella Lu, being the only player on the court to have scored with two close-range shots.

What was more worth mentioning was the sturdy defense led by the captain of the team, Victoria Qian. With some steals of the ball from Sophie Chen and blocked shots from Jessica Huo, the Stallions were able to prevent the Rams from scoring. Amazing assists by Catherine Liao and Jenny Huang gave a powerful boost to the Stallions acing the match.

Some improvements that Coach Walker emphasized were incorporating the plays practiced in training into real matches so that scoring could be easier and more efficient. Basic skills such as lay-ups, shooting (especially foul shots), and dribbling techniques still could be reinforced, along with some teamwork. Finally, fitness would be useful for fortifying players’ stamina so there would be fewer substitutions, giving players more time to rest and regain their strength. Then again, the result of 28-9 was an amazing achievement for the young Stallions at their first game.

We hope that by analyzing the game clip and more training, the U15 Girls’ Stallions’ Basketball Team will tack on another spectacular win in the upcoming game.
