Grade 10 Club Highlights: Health One Youth Club, One Heart for Health

December 7, 2022

Newly established this September, the Health One Youth Club focuses on the prevention and management of respiratory diseases, with the goal of promoting healthy lifestyles and fair access to health services. Through continuous volunteer activities, the club aims to help promote public health awareness, learn about diseases and their scientific treatment plans, and improve members’ overall wellbeing.

The club activities can be summarized by the word “B.L.A.S.T”, which are Bike for Lung (cycling events), Link for Lung (industry expert sharing sessions), Art for Lung (health promotion), Screen for Lung (early screening volunteer activities) and Treat for Lung (pulmonary rehabilitation workshop).

During the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, club members completed a 46-km round-trip ride from Tangxia Highway to Dishui Lake. Along the way were the shady boulevards and nothing but the wind in their hair and a nice cool breeze; upon arrival, they checked in at sparkling Dishui Lake. While it was a great way to exercise the heart and lungs, they also relieved the stress of studying. During the National Holiday week, club members took on the challenge of riding 30 km visiting Nanxiang Ancient Town and Guyi Yuan. Although it was a hot day, they had the motivation to go forward after taking a break on the way to taste xiao long bao and mango ice.

On Oct. 14, the club members went to a community in Pudong for Screen for Lung early screening volunteer activities, along with the respiratory physicians of Dongfang Hospital, to conduct health education and early screening for the elderly in the neighborhood. Members assisted in the promotion of the event, helped the elderly who did not know how to use electronic devices complete the Respiratory Disease Risk Questionnaire, and learned how to operate the spirometer to help the elderly check their lung function. Many elderly residents mentioned that they had been suffering from breathing problems for a long time, but were afraid or unsure of how to seek medical help due to the epidemic. Through the volunteer activities, club members honored the elderly in other families like they would have with their own, and they gained first-hand experience of the public primary healthcare system.

In the coming activities, Health One Club will continue to invite medical professionals to share in bi-weekly online meetings, and leverage World COPD Day and World Smoking Cessation Day to advocate the importance of respiratory health in the public and in the community. Health One Club welcomes students who are interested in volunteering or medical careers to join our activities. All the best for health!
