Grades 11: Table Tennis Competition

November 11, 2022

To promote the sport of table tennis within SHSID, a class-wide tournament for high school students was held at the beginning of November. This competition gave students a distinct opportunity to experience the well-beloved sport in a relatively competitive environment between themselves while strengthening their bond with classmates.

The rules differ by the number of players on one side: singles and doubles. In singles, in a 1-vs.-1 match, the player’s serving is successful as long as the ball bounces once on their side of the net, goes over it, and lands on the opponent’s side. For doubles, the requirements are more strict: the server must land on the diagonal corner of the table, with the server standing on the right side of the table. Since the competitors are from all four grades in high school, it is designed in a tournament system. In other words, the classes are separated based on the lottery draw. The winning team would progress to the next round, and this cycle continues until the ultimate winner is decided.

During lunchtime on Nov. 8th, the juniors and seniors marked the start of the first annual table tennis competition. After rounds of intensive matchups, 12(7) and 12(10) successfully moved on to the second round. For junior students, 11(4) and 11(8) stood out and will participate in further rounds. Although we only have seen a few matches from high school students, we anticipate seeing how enthusiastic and passionate the sophomores and freshmen will be.

Even though wins and losses are essential for the ping-pong tournament, whether students enjoy the matches or not is most important, as it is also the incentive for hosting this tournament. The athletes continued to practise before the game, and a few members of the varsity team demonstrated their professional skills and helped the amateur athletes with unique details. Some talented students even competed with the ping-pong players from the SHSID ping-pong team and lost by only a two-point gap! This unexpected score shocked both the varsity team and the students, indicating the Stallion spirit every SHSIDer has somewhere deep in their heart.

As the atmosphere of the ping pong court continued to heat up, the ping-pong competition not only gave students a brief break from their academics but also the opportunity to exhibit their sportsmanship. Just like Sports Week of October, we wish high school students to be active and stay healthy.
