Puxi Campus G4-5: Chinese Reading Month
Autumn carries gold in its pocket with osmanthus fragrance everywhere, while our G4-5 students from SHSID Puxi campus welcomed the Chinese reading month of this semester.
G4: Parent-Child Book Reading
The fourth-grade reading month “Share the Books” advocated parent-child reading. Fourth-grade Chinese teachers invited students and parents to choose a favored book from the suggested Chinese reading list. Students and their parents would read and finish the reading booklet together.
In the first week of the reading month, our students sorted the book’s basic information, plotline, and main characters. Along with the reading, students and parents competed with each other on the book content. They designed questions for each other, answered them, and then checked the answers as a teacher.
During the process, students also concluded various opinions they had as their parents. They were able to find evidence in the text to demonstrate their viewpoints, presenting independent thinking and critical thinking skills.
After the whole reading activity, students and parents had a reflection on these activities, giving plenty of likes and thumb ups. Some students wished they could have more opportunities to read with their parents and enjoy the reading together. Some students felt like to doing more and expect to have a role play with their parents to show the story. This reading booklet guided students how to think, conclude and summarize step by step, which some parents consider as a great opportunity for their kids to practice their note-taking skills. Therefore, they expect their children to keep the good habit, recording the thinking while reading.
G5: Whole Book Reading
This month, the fifth graders enjoyed being in the sea of books. In addition to reading their favorite Chinese books, each student was immersed in the childhood story of the girl called “Yaya” and completed the whole book reading of "Mouse Gets Up Late”.
This book is the first children's literature work by Ye Guangqin. It tells the story of a little girl “Yaya”, running around in the huge Summer Palace, talking with a little mouse, taking a walk with a turtle, counting celestial monsters on the eaves, and pursuing traditional culture with her new friends. All these ingenuous childhood stories let the students experience a different childhood.
In addition to intensive reading, each student completed a reading manual in this month. The teachers prepared rich and interesting topics for the students to learn to extract effective information from books, generate associations through stories and recall their childhood. Finally, they also shared the most impressive character in their works. During Chinese class every week, our teachers shared the interesting plots with the students, discussed the controversial ones, and experienced the ingenuous childhood of “Yaya” with the students.
It is hoped that students can enjoy reading and the beauty of books all the way throughout their time in SHSID!
