Grades 11-12: English Speech Competition

November 29, 2021

On the afternoon of November 24th, the 11th- and 12th-grade students of Shanghai High School International Division participated in the school's annual speech competition. Like last year, the theme of the speeches was to share about a topic of personal interest. Due to the wide scope afforded by the subject, each participant was given an opportunity to uniquely express themselves while showcasing their speech-giving capabilities.

The first speech was from a senior with the theme of her speech being "sympathizing with unfortunate people." Although students at SHSID tend to face immense pressure, it is undeniable that being in this position required a great deal of luck. In her speech, the contestant passionately outlined her experience volunteering in remote areas, showing the differences between the life and learning conditions of students in those places with that of SHSID students. To conclude, she asked the students to cherish all that they have been given and petitioned for them to try and participate more in helping those who are less fortunate.

In addition to important social topics, many participants chose a more humorous theme and style. For example, another senior brought a wonderful speech about escalators. Although the theme and intent of the speech were simple, his unique points of focus, array of jokes, and vibrant body language made the speech very enjoyable.

After all 13 participants gave their speeches, the teachers decided the final winners. Max Chen from 12(7) won first place, Ella Lam from 11(3) won second place, and Katelyn Kuo of class 12(8) and Derek Chen of class 11(5) tied for third.

Even though all competitions must eventually end with a cruel judgment of who wins and who loses, all participants gave the student body as well as teachers interesting things to think about while gaining excellent experience in giving speeches in front of public eyes. Hopefully, students will continue to push and challenge themselves, striving for even better results with their speeches!
