Grade 6: Youth Development Class—Puberty (II)
On April 14th, 2021, Grade 6 students had their second puberty lesson. Male and female students once again went to separate classrooms for this lesson. This class was different from the first one the students had about a month ago due to less focus on the facts and information about puberty and more about understanding how everyone is different, and that’s okay.
The class started with a Q&A PPT created based on questions submitted anonymously at the end of the last puberty lesson. Students felt comforted as they found out that they weren’t going through all sorts of changes alone, though to them, it may seem like it. Teachers provided advice telling students what was normal regarding changes in their body and what they should do in a situation when they knew something was wrong. They made the class less awkward by adding in some jokes and little personal anecdotes. At the end of the first half of the class, students were much more familiar with the extent of change they will expect. Teachers also shared resources to use if students run into problems which was an important reassurance to have when students go through a series of sudden changes.
The next half of the class focused more on the psychological part of going through puberty. Everyone is different. Everyone has a unique body, mind, and personality. Since students are unable to understand what exactly their peers are going through, unless they experience it, respect for each other is the most important facet of puberty. Teachers specially taught this by having students react and respond to different scenarios related to other’s experiences through puberty. During this activity, students learned how to deal with toxic friendships and to create boundaries, which is an essential part of maintaining constant relationships with their friends during the turbulent time of puberty.
After the two classes, students were well equipped with both detailed information and other resources and can now face the change happening to them with a positive attitude.
